Councilors: Bronson, Nealley, Wheeler
Staff: Cyr, Caruso,
1. Request for Approval to Purchase Hangar poor
Cyr noted that due to a recent malfunction of a hangar door at the former '
Telford Aviation building at BIA, staff would like to review the option of replacing
the door in lieu of repairing it. The door itself weighs about 19,000 pounds, and
is an original military door installed in the 1950's. It is currently stuck in an open
position due to a mechanism issue on the right hand side. Two years ago, there
were similar issues with the left hand side and was repaired at a cost of $24,000.
The Airport had planned to replace this door next year. Staff received an
estimate of $30,000 for the current repair. The Airport staff had anticipated
including this in their FY12 budget as a replacement item. The Building ,
Maintenance Supervisor has found several types of doors that can be purchased
for a hangar. Quotes were received and the recommendation is to purchase a
bi-fold door, which is the less expensive door. The lead time to purchase the
door is 6-8 weeks. If the Committee desires to replace the door, staff needs to
order the door tomorrow for installation prior to winter weather conditions.
Staff recommendation is to purchase the bi-fold door from Schweiss Bi-Fold Door
Company at a cost of $75,000. During the lead time to having the door on site,
there is other necessary on site work. Installation services will need to be bid
out.
Responding to Bronson, Caruso said the Airport has available contingency funds '
for emergency purposes to cover the project. Responding to Nealley, Caruso
said it is a large, heavy, massive door. Although not certain of the current door
in terms of a firewall, Caruso said the new door would meet all specifications.
Nealley made a motion to approve staff recommendation. Wheeler, filling in as
an alternate committee member, seconded the motion. In order to place the
order for the door, Cyr noted that a Council Order is required due to be cost
being over $50,000 to be considered under Suspension of Rules at this evening's '
Council meeting. Cyr will prepare the Order.
Meeting adjourned at 5:08 pm.
