Director's Report:
Carpenter Associates is preparing an estimate of cost for design and construction '
of a new maintenance building at the Golf Course. It is hoped that construction will begin '
next year. We are expecting the results of a feasibility study of the bathhouse at Dakin Pool
soon. The study will compare the cost of refurbishing the existing building with an addition
and the cost of replacing it with a new facility. It will be the City Council's decision whether '
or not the pool will operate next summer.
Proqram Report: '
Instructional Basketball for grades K through two that concluded at the end of
November had 65 youngsters participating weekly. The Youth Basketball League for boys ,
and girls in grades 3 through 5 is made up of ten teams and began play last Saturday.
The Bangor Noontime Kiwanis Club is once again co-sponsoring the North Pole '
Calling Program. This program gives children in grades K through 2 a chance to talk
directly to Santa over the telephone.
Registrations are being accepted for the first session of Ski and Snowboard '
Lessons at Hermon Mountain that begin in early January.
A new session of Little Reckees begins December 15�h. This program is for 3 and 4 ,
year-olds and introduces them to the skills and fun of team sports.
Pre-School Open Gym held Monday through Friday mornings at the Rec Center '
continues to be very popular.

Aduit Open Gyms are held at the Rec Center during the winter months. Volleyball is
' offered on Monday evenings and basketball is offered on Tuesday evenings. Now that we
have a new gym floor the Adult Basketball has been moved from Cohen School to the Rec
Center. We have received many favorable comments regarding the new flooring in the
� gymnasium.
Sawver Arena Report:
, The Arena opened in mid•October and remains open through the end of March.
Public Skating is offered Monday through Friday 12:30•1:30 p.m.for$3 and on Sundays
' from 4:00-5:30 p.m.for$5. Children 5 and under are free. Sunday's Public Skate is very
popular averaging about 50 per day. We may offer a Public Skate on Saturdays next year if
it can be worked into schedule. Figure Skating is also offered weekdays from 1:30-220 p.m.
' The first session of Learn to Skate has 32 participants and is going very well. The
second session begins January 9�. Bangor Youth Hockey is the largest user of ice time.
' Bangor and John Bapst High Schools call Sawyer Arena home as well. Other groups
renting ice time are the Penobscot Figure Skating Club,Adult Mens and Womens teams,
' Aipha One and occasionally the University of Maine Mens and Womens teams. Rental rates
are $180 per hour and $140 per hour for early morning weekday rentals. The Rink Manager
Joe Nelson praised the dedication of his staff. He also remarked how the expansion of the
' arena has made the facility a great place to play and watch hockey. The new skate
sharpening machine has been a great asset to the arena and will pay for itself in a short
time.
' Following the meeting,the committee was afforded the opportunity to tour the
facility.
