 Afterschool Program
YMCA Executive Director Rob Reeves presented a proposal from
the YMCAIYWCA to operate the afterschool program for 4"' and
5' graders at Mary Snow and Fairmount Schools. The proposal
' included a request that 4he $21,000 in the Parks 8 Recreation
budget to operate the AfteRec Program be utilized by the Ys to
' provide scholarships for the program.
The Ys are required by the Department of Human Services to
, license all childcare programs. Licensing by the State of Maine
enables parents to apply for funding through a variety of sources
including the Aspire and Voucher programs.
The Ys hope to enroll 25 children at each site which will require
approximately 900 square feet of space at each school.

Celebration on September 7°1i.
Departmental staff are exploring the possibility of partnering
with the Meals For Me Program to provide a free nutritious meal
to members of our Senior Citizens Club once a week. The
department must provide a coordinator for the program and the
Seniors must provide servers each week. If the program is
successful, it could be expanded to two or three days a week.
Departmental revenues for FY02 were approximately $33,000
above projections. Frank noted that is an indication that most '
programs were well attended.
Construction at Sawyer Arena is going well and is on schedule.
Responding to a question, Frank indicated that ice rental fees for
this winter will be $160 per hour.
Frank distributed a conceptual sketch of the proposed swimming
pool which includes a zero entry kiddy pool, family swim area,
lap swim area, and a water slide pool. Stephen and Tabitha King
donated $7,150,000 towards the $1,500,000 project. City Staff
