HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-08-05 Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee Minutes � � � ,, � Parks 8� Recreation Advisory Board Minutes of August 5, 2002 � � Members Present: Councilor Allen, Louise Shindler, John Dionne, Thomas Civiello, Matt Watkins � Staff Present: Frank Comeau, Tracy Wiilette � Others Present: YMCA Staff Members, Rob Reeves, � Courtney Collins, Lisa Wicks � Afterschool Program � YMCA Executive Director Rob Reeves presented a proposal from the YMCAIYWCA to operate the afterschool program for 4"' and 5�' graders at Mary Snow and Fairmount Schools. The proposal ' included a request that 4he $21,000 in the Parks 8� Recreation budget to operate the AfteRec Program be utilized by the Ys to ' provide scholarships for the program. The Ys are required by the Department of Human Services to ,� license all childcare programs. Licensing by the State of Maine enables parents to apply for funding through a variety of sources � including the Aspire and Voucher programs. � The Ys hope to enroll 25 children at each site which will require approximately 900 square feet of space at each school. � � � � Advisory Board Minu4es Page two. � It is the understanding of the Ys that the School Department will ' have �nal approval of the program. � � After a detailed discussion, it was moved by John Dionne and seconded by Tom Civiello to recommend approval of 4he � YMCA/1fWCA After School Program including $21,000 for the first year only. The motion was unanimously approved. � Director's Report The Director reminded the board of the upcoming Cascade Park � Celebration on September 7°1i. � Departmental staff are exploring the possibility of partnering � with the Meals For Me Program to provide a free nutritious meal to members of our Senior Citizens Club once a week. The department must provide a coordinator for the program and the � Seniors must provide servers each week. If the program is successful, it could be expanded to two or three days a week. � Departmental revenues for FY02 were approximately $33,000 above projections. Frank noted that is an indication that most ' programs were well attended. Construction at Sawyer Arena is going well and is on schedule. � Responding to a question, Frank indicated that ice rental fees for � this winter will be $160 per hour. Frank distributed a conceptual sketch of the proposed swimming � pool which includes a zero entry kiddy pool, family swim area, lap swim area, and a water slide pool. Stephen and Tabitha King � donated $7,150,000 towards the $1,500,000 project. Construction could possibiy begin this fall. Proqram Report � Tracy distributed a report of ongoing programs. He noted that � the Soccer and Track 8 Field Camps were both well attended. Summer Day Camp is very popular with 25-30 attending daily. � We are currently accepting registrations for the Labor Day Road Race 4o be held September 2n°. Fall Soccer begins Sept. 7"'. � Meeting adjourned at 5:15 p.m. ' Next meeting will be September 9"' because of the Labor Day holiday. � ' � , � � � � '
