WHEREAS, Bangor Communications, Inc. operates television station WVII-Tv in the City of Bangor, and WREREAS, Channel ) was the first U.S. Television Station to broadcast in the Maritime province of Canada, and WHEREAS, WVII-TV has traditionally been carried by Maritime Canadian cable television distributors, and WHEREAS, WVII-TV has long offered a mutually beneficial service to both U. S. and Maritime Canadian viewers and advertisers reflecting the community of interests between the two areas, and WHEREAS, WVII-TV 1s a valued U. S. advertising medium for Maritime business and governmental agency advertisers, and WHEREAS, WVII-TV provides continuous promotional visibility for Bangor and Maine businesses, especially retail and tourism -related businesses, throughout Maritime Canada, and WHEREAS, 'Chamcook Communications Limited, representing 27 Maritime Canadian cable television distributors has applied to their regulator, the Canadian Radio- Television Telecommunicatlons Commission (CRTC) to substitute programming of a Detroit ABC affiliate in the place of WWII -TV programming, and WHEREAS, the justifications for said application are technical considerations which are being addressed by Bangor Communications, Inc., and WHEREAS, approval of the cable companies' request would adversely impact WVII-TV, the Bangor retail and hospitality industries, the Maine economy and access of Maritime Canadian businesses to effective and affordable U. S. telecommunications advertising and public service air time, and WHEREAS, implementation of the recently concluded U.S./Canada Free Trade Agreement and Partnership initiatives by the Chambers of Commerce of both New Brunawick and Wain depends upon open and accessible communications across the border; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of Bangor, Raine requests that the Canadian Radio -Television Telecommunications Commission deny the, request of the Chamcook Communications Limited to substitute programming of the recruit ABC affiliate for that of WVII-Tv of Bangor, Mine. 90-317 IN CITY COUNCIL RESOLVE - Television Station NVII-TV'e Continued August 27, 1990 Broadcast by Parities Canadian Cable Television Sugpeoeion of the Rules Distributors.
