Acceptance of Opinion of the Boad of Ethics on the Referral of Councilor Cary Weston and Finding No
Violation of the Code of Ethics by Councilor Cary Weston
On December 27, 2017, Councilor Weston voluntarily disclosed to the City Council that he had
mistakenly stated during a 2017 budget meeting that his firm of Sutherland Weston had no financial
relationship with the Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau, an organization that receives
funding from the City of Bangor. On January 8, 2018 the City Council, referred the question of
whether Councilor Weston's failure to disclose the financial relationship was an actual or potential
violation of the Code of Ethics, to the City of Bangor's Board of Ethics for its consideration pursuant
to the ordinances of the City of Bangor.
On January 30, 2018, the Board of Ethics met to review relevant written documents and videos, as
well as oral testimony and a written statement from Councilor Weston. Upon review of the
information and in response to the question submitted by the City Council, The Ethics Committee
issued a unanimous opinion that Councilor Weston did not violate the City of Bangor's Code of
Ethics.
