ABSTRACT OF PROGRAM
The new nucturina program, Mother -to -Mother, being proposed will
be implemented to assist teens in preparing for parenting. The
volunteer teen participants would be residents of Bangor, Maine
and would be recruited primarily from Clients already an Bangor
City Public Bealth Nursing's caseload. The teen participants
would be matched to Community mentors by the nurse coordinator
of the program. The ideal match would start in the teen's
second trimester and Continue at least through the first 6
months of parenting giving the teen approximately a one year
contract with the mentor. Plans are to match 5 mentors and 5
teens for the year 1991.
Review of the literature shows that pregnant teens tend to be
isolated, lack motivation, have low self-esteem, have poor role
models, and arenon-coolant with health care prOCocola. She
overall behavioral objective for the proposed program is that
teens who participate in the Mother -to -Mother program for a year
will enhance self-esteem and assume increased responsibility for
their prenatal health care in order to enjoy healthier babies.
Once the match is completed, the mentor will travel to meet the
teen in her home on a weekly basis. The health education
strategy planned for a program of this type will be informal and
non -structured. The mentor will be demonstrating homemaking and
child care skills to the teen. Other activities to be
accomplished include shopping tripe, clinicvsits and
creational outings. The mentor will be serving as a listener,
friend, and role model to assist the teen in making better
health decisions for herself and her baby.
