To improve our communication system, the University of Maine System desires
to connect our System Office Building at 109 Maine Avenue to a state-wide optic fiber
network which Carries video and data services. The nearest connection to this
network is in Bangor Hall on our Bangor Campus.
We have investigated several alternatives including a microwave system and
buried cable between the two buildings. The cost of the buried cable option is
excessive if we attempt to avoid the possible building sites in the proposed Bangor
ew
Professional Park. A similar problem sts with the microwave solution as the
height and location of buildings are unknown.
This leaves us with a option to run fiber cable on the exisfing power poles
along Maine Avenue. The distance from 107 Maine Avenue to Bangor Hall is
approximately 3000 ft and would require attachment to 24 poles. Our review
indicates the poles on Maine Avenue belong m the City of Bangor, but may be
transferred to Bangor Hydro Electric in the coming months.
Prior to the transfer of this pole line to Bangor Hydro, the University
System would like to obtain authorization from the City of Bangor, to run cable on
the=e poles between Bangor Hall and 107 Maine Avenue, Stephen Beldoc, Bangor
Economic Development Officer, has advised that you are the appropriate person to
contact for approval to attach fiber optic cable to these poles.
Would you please advise us of any additional steps we must take to get
authorization to install cable on these poles.
