Privatize Provision of Alzheimer and Related Inpatient Programa at
Bangor Mental Health Institute

RESOLVED.
wHBRBAS,
the State of Maine, through its Department of Mental
Health and Mental Retardation, currently provides
inpatientcare to gangor-arest residents suffering
from Alzheimer's disease through the Department's
"Program on Aging" at the Bangor Mental Health
xnstitute's Pooler Pavilion; and
WHEREAS,
the Department's "Program on Aging' at Bangor Mental
Health Institute provides services essential to the
physical health and social welfare of Bangor -area
residents; and
WHEREAS,
the State of Maine is currently contemplating a
program to privatise services presently provided
through the Department's Program on Aging; and
wHBRBAS, the proposed privatization of those services by the
State of Maine may result in termination of the
Department's in-patient care to Alzheimer patients at
Bangor Mental Health Institute, and of other
in-patient services currently provided through the
Department's Program on Aging; and
WHEREAS-, numerous residant�-Bangor and .its, surrounding_... ._.
communities have expressed concern that the proposed
privatization. of the Department's Program on Aging
will .reduce the level and quality of care provided to
their dependent parents and senior family members;
and
WHEREAS a number of Maine residents concerned about the
proposed privatization of the Department's Program o
Aging have organized themselves into a body under the
name -"Coalition to Preserve and Defend Services at
Bangor Mental Health Institute and Augusta Mental
Health Institute";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of
Bangor hereby supports the efforts of the Coalition
to Preserve and Defend Services at Bangor Mental
Health Institute and Augusta Mental Health Institute
to seek a review,
of the State of Maine's proposed
privatization of the Department of Mental Health and
Mental Retardation's Program on Aging; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of Bangor
urges the Department to retain a system of in-patient
care at Bangor Mental Health Institute for Bangor
area Alzheimer patients and other clients currently
served by the Program on Aging at Bangor Mental
Health's Punier Pavilion.
