for Locating a Veterans' Nome in the City of Bangor

RESOLVED,
WHEREAS, two additional veterans' homes are needed
to provide adequate care and service to Maine veterans; and
WHRREAS, facilities are especially needed to -provide - -
care for veterans with alzhelmers disease and other diseases of
the elderly; and
WHEREAS, existing veterans' home facilities located
in Augusta, Scarborough, and Caribou leave large gaps in both
geographic areae served and in the availability of proper
professional care for elderly veterans; and
WHEREAS,federal funds may be available for the
construction of additional veterans' homes; and
WHEREAS, the board of trustees of Maine Veterans
Homes has recommended that two new 120 -bed veterans' homes be
built, each with 40 beds for veterans with disease of the elderly;
and
WHEREAS, veteransresiding in Penobscot,
Piscataquis, Washington, Hancock and Waldo counties in eastern
Maine are not adequately served by an existing Maine Veterans
Home; and
WHEREAS, Bangor is centrally located to the
population of the unserved eastern Maine counties; and
WHEREAS, Bangor has excellent transportation links
to all of.. eastern Maine; and
WHEREAS, Bangor has the highest concentration of
health care professionals, services and facilities in eastern
Maine; and
WHEREAS, there is suitably zoned and serviced
state-owned land ideally located on Hogan Road between I-95 and
the Eastern Maine Medical Center which the Maine Veterans Homes
board of trustees are
considering for the location of an. Eastern
Maine Veterans Home and
WHEREAS, experience with the three existing veterans
homes has proven large homes to be more efficient and ,at
effective in operation than smaller homes;
HOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF HANGAR: THAT the City Council of the City of
Bangor
a
120-bed supports and encourages the timely construction of a
bHaine Veterans Home to be located an Hogan Road in Bangor.
