Item/Subject: Authorizing Transfer of Law Books to Custody of
Bangor Public Library
Responsible Department Legal
Commentary:
This Order will approve transfer of certain law books to the Bangor
Public Library, with title to be retained by the City of Bangor.
The City Solicitor's office, a ong other legal publications,
urrently has a full set of Maine reporters and Maine uncodified
statutes dating back to 1020. These combined publications
constitute a complete set of all published Law Court decisions and
statutes enacted by the Legislature since ceation of the State of
Maine. The Maine Reporter series prior to 1920 and uncodified
statutes prior to 1917 are original leather-bound volumes, s of
e
which a a deteriorating condition. The City's Legal Dept•
does notcurrently use either the early reporter series or the
uncodified statutes frequently enough to justify maintenance of
these volumes in the City Solicitor's office. Transfer of these
volumes to the Bangor Public Library will allow them to be preserved
as an historic resource for the community as well.
