This change would result in a single continuous street name linking two major arterial highways, Onion Street and Broadway. This change would eliminate present confusion due to "Griffin Road" becoming 'Strickland Road' at Mendugkeag Avenue o what appears to be the same the travelling public. Changing of existing street names is provided for La Charter VI, Article 2A, Section 9 of the City Ordinances relating to the Official City Map. Also attached is a memo by the City Engineer regarding the History of these public ways. Bk. 5-123 I also found several old Plans from the 1800's which show portions of the streets referenced in the above chronology. Based on this research, I was able to determine the following: 1) Griffin Road was formerly celled Blake Road until it was renamed sometime around the turn of the Century. Reason for renaming to Griffin Road not known. 2) Strickland Road was likely named for the Strickland family who operated Strickland's Mills on the Kenduskeag Stream. 3) Burleigh Road was named for landowner through whose land road was established. 4) In the mid -1800's bath the Blake Road (now Griffin) and Strickland Road existed between Ohio Street and the Kenduskeag Stream. This portion of Strickland was abandoned in the 1860'x. " 5) Originally Griffin Road, Strickland Road, and Burleigh Road did not line up with each other at Kenduskeag Ave. and Broadway the way they do today. The present continuous alignment is a result of right-of-way relocations over the years. Apparently there has been some discussion about renaming all or same portions of these streets to provide more continuity. As you know, there are presently numerous street addresses on Griffin Road and Burleigh -2 Mad; however, there are only twoon Strickland Road (Fire Station and Water District pumpstation). If any further consideration is given to changing street panes, I would suggest that Strickland Road could be changed to Griffin end Burleigh Road left as it is This approach would provide a single continuous street (Griffin Road) between two major arterials (Onion Street -11.5. Ree. 222, and Broadway - State Rte. 15), and would result in minimal disruption to existing street addresses. If you have any questions or need additional information, please let me know. -3- T.D.R. 93-119
