PROCLAIMING JANUARY 2018 A TIME FOR "BANGOR READS!"
WHEREAS, The Bangor Public Library is nationally recognized for both its quality and for
the high circulation levels it achieves; and
WHEREAS, The Library sponsors the "Bangor Reads!" campaign, a program designed to
unify all community residents in reading the same book at the same time and
participating in discussions about it; and
WHEREAS, Bangor is a community of readers, as shown over 500,000 items checked out
each year from the Library; and
WHEREAS, This program expands the community of readers, creates conversation
throughout Bangor, and spreads the joy of reading and feeling of comradery
during the bleakest days of winter; and
WHEREAS, As this year's work, the Library has selected A Man Called Ove by Fredrik
Backman, an award-winning and critically -acclaimed Swedish bio -novel; and
WHEREAS, Through several events from film screenings to trivia nights, the Library hopes
to start discussions around celebrating the unexpected, and sometimes life -
altering, encounters with people different from ourselves, as well as the true
meaning of friendship and family.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Benjamin A. Sprague, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of
the City Council, and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim the month of January 2018 as a
time for "Bangor Reads!" I call upon all of our citizens to read A Man Called Ove, to join in
discussions of this work, both informally and by participating in the various public events
scheduled at the Bangor Public Library, and to make a special effort to explore the joys of
literature. . &."A,,
