Item No. 94-151
Item/Subject 1994 National Coa®unity Development Week
Responsible Department: Community and Economic Development
1994 marks the 20th anniversary of one of the federal government's most
successful and popular local government assistance programs, the Community
Development Block Grant program. Created for developing viable urban
communities by making available to local decision makers financial resources
to provide decent housing and a suitable living environment, and expanding
economic opportunities, principally for person of low- and moderate -income,
theCommunity Development Program has contributed over
$25 million to
Bangor's community and economic development efforts since 1975.
Throughout the 20 year history of Bangor's Community Development
Program, the emphasis has been o neighborhood improvements, rehabilitation
of private dwellings, job creation, dontown revitalization and improvements
to neighborhood streets, sidewalks and parks.a There is hardly a street or
park in the city which hasn't been impacted in some positive manner.
The problems of inadequate housing and obsolete public facilities were
recognized as basic community needs when the Community Development Program
s designed two decades ago to improve housing and public facilities. These
activities continue today to ensure that the citizens of Bangor have safe,
sanitary and suitable housing and public facilities which are functional,
efficient and attractive. The intent of this Resolvertoincrease
awareness of the importance of the Community Development Program to our
citizens and elected officials in Washington.
