HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994-03-28 94-151 RESOLVE- COUNCIL ACTION Date: March 28 1994 Item No. 94-151 Item/Subject 1994 National Coa®unity Development Week Responsible Department: Community and Economic Development 1994 marks the 20th anniversary of one of the federal government's most successful and popular local government assistance programs, the Community Development Block Grant program. Created for developing viable urban communities by making available to local decision makers financial resources to provide decent housing and a suitable living environment, and expanding economic opportunities, principally for person of low- and moderate -income, theCommunity Development Program has contributed over $25 million to Bangor's community and economic development efforts since 1975. Throughout the 20 year history of Bangor's Community Development Program, the emphasis has been o neighborhood improvements, rehabilitation of private dwellings, job creation, dontown revitalization and improvements to neighborhood streets, sidewalks and parks.a There is hardly a street or park in the city which hasn't been impacted in some positive manner. The problems of inadequate housing and obsolete public facilities were recognized as basic community needs when the Community Development Program s designed two decades ago to improve housing and public facilities. These activities continue today to ensure that the citizens of Bangor have safe, sanitary and suitable housing and public facilities which are functional, efficient and attractive. The intent of this Resolvertoincrease awareness of the importance of the Community Development Program to our citizens and elected officials in Washington. WHEREAS, the week of March 28 through April 3, 1994 has been designated as National Community Development Week and the City of Bangor is a participant in the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program which funds a myriad of neighborhood revitalization, economic development and housing programs in this community; and WHEREAS, in Bangor and in communities throughout the nation, twenty years of Community Development Block Grant program funding has developed a strong working network of relationships between local government and residents of the City's neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor recognizes that the Community Development Block Grant program i a partnership of Federal, local communitygovernment, non -prof it and community efforts, and that the proj seta and activities funded by the Federal CDBG program and administered by local government, relies heavily on the dedication and goodwill of our combined efforts; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT during National Community Development Week of 1994, the City of Bangor gives special thanks and recognition to all participants whose hard work and devotion to the neighborhoods and their low- and moderate -income residents help insure the quality and effectiveness of the Community Development Block Grant program; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the City of Bangor hereby petitions the O. S. Congress and Administration to recognize the outstanding work being done locally and nationally by the Community Development Block Grant program, its vital importance to the community and to the people who live in its lower income neighborhoods; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT copies of this resolution be conveyed to the appropriate elected and appointed officials in the Federal government and that Bangor's name be added to the roll of those committed to the preservationand full funding of the Community Development Block Grant program and maintenance of its essential features over the course of the next Congress.
