Re: Merrimac St. parking ban proposal
Date: 03/10/94
Recently Gary Jewell, parking Supervisor, visited the residents
of merriest St. to ask their opinion of the proposed parking ban.
Gary distributed a survey to each of the twenty five or so homes
on Merrimac St. There were five surveys returned and another
five residents appeared at the Community and Economic Development
Committee meeting on March 9th. The following reflects the
results of the ten people that responded.
1. Would you favor a parking ban on Merriman St. from November
1st through Watch 31st annually? 5 -YES 4 -NO 1 -UNDECIDED
2. Would you like to see the direction of the one way traffic
reversed so that vehicles would travel from Hancock St. to
State St.? 0 -YES 30 -NO 0 -UNDECIDED
Additional suggestions or comments that were made:
- Would prefer that area was temporarily posted during snow
storms
- have the City develop/maintain the lot at 55-57 Merrimac and
make it available for residents to use
- use the lot at 263 State St. (corner of State and Merrimac)
for after hours parking
- plow the snow to the opposite side (left) of Merrimac St.
February 28, 1994
Dear Resident
94-97
In the fall of 1993 a committee was appointed to take a
comprehensive look at parking and traffic issues on the east side
of Bangor. This committee has representatives from several city
departments including police, fire, public works, engineering,
and planning. One of the areas that has been given a great deal
of thought is Merrimac St.
Due to the narrow width (20 ft.) of Merrimac St., onstreet
parking has been creating problems with the passage of emergency,
vehicles and snow plows. The problem appears to be worse in the
wintertime because the houses are so close to the street that
public works is unable to push the snow far enough off the road.
Therefore, the committee has made the recommiendatlon to prohibit
all parking on Merrimac St. from November 1st to March 31st,
annually.
At a meeting of the Community and Economic Development Committee
on February 23, 1994, the police department was asked to survey
the residents and look for alternatives.
_There will be a meeting of the Community and Economic Development
Committee on Wednesday, March 9, 1994 at 5x00 W. to discuss this
The meeting will be Mid in the council chambers (3rd
floor) at city hall, 73 Harlow St. This meeting is open to the
public, and your opinion or concern may be expressed at that
time.
If you cannot attend, or have questions o comments, please
contact Gary Jewell, Parking Supervisor, at 947-7397 or 947-7382
ext. 232.
