Responsible Department: Legal/Community, and Economic Development Department Commentary, During recent discussions concerning security/liability concerns at the Bangor Waterworks, Councilor Stonessed a question concerning the procedure regarding demolition of the complex. Hased on this inquiry, City staff have researched and reviewed information concerning various options for the Waterworks property. Asynopsis of this research was presented to the Community and Economic Development Committee on January 5, 1994. Costs of demolition ($500,000 rough eatimate), long-term stabilization ($150,000-$2001000 rough estimate), partial demolition ($100,000 rough estimate), gate house removal ($5,000- $15,000 rough estimate), complete renovation ($2-3 million rough estimate), annual security maintenance ($5, 000 rough estimate) were presented to the Committee. The Committee voted unanimously to recommend that the full Council authorize staff to seek appropriate authority from the Historic Preservation Commission to demolish or remove all or part of the Waterworks complex, and to utilize the' 180 -day time period stated in the Ordinance to further explore options for the property. Although no Committee member advocated demolition or removal, the consensus was that the City should have the ability to act on all options when and if money becomes available or developer interest shows itself with regard to future e of this property. Approval will allow this matter to be considered by the Historic Preservation Commission at its meeting Ort February 10, 1994 at 7:30 PH.
