STATE OF MAINE P;aoram- Immunization
DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES
BUREAU OF HEALTH Grant dates1011/949/30/95
Since 1979 the Bangor Health & Welfare Department Immunization Program
has operated in conjunction with, and has been funded by, the State Bureau of Health
Immunization Program to provide services to the residents of Northern and Eastern
Maine. In the fall of 1993 Bangor Program staff increased from one to three positions
with the onset of Federal Immunization Action Plan funding: one full-time health
educator and two part-time public health nurses. The director of the Bangor Health &
Welfare Department serves as project supervisor and grant manager. Bangor
Program efforts are communicated to the State Program Grant Manager through.
quarterly reports and attendance at periodic State Program staff meetings. -
Since long before 1979 the Public Health Nursing Division of Bangor Health &
Welfare has provided a variety of preventive health services primarily to Bangor
residents. Historically these services have included semi-monthly immunization clinics.
These regularly scheduled clinics always have been held at locations in Bangor and
mainly have served patients of area pediatricians. IAP funding has enabled Bangor
Program staff to expand services targeted toward infants and children under the age of
two. Specifically the Program has increased to six the number of clinics offered each
month, has promoted the clinics more effectively, and has augmented the
remindeorecall system designed to increase clients' rate of return.
This grant award will allow the Bangor Health & Weffare Department to maintain
its immunization services, and to pass knowlegde gained through our efforts to public
and private sector practices throughout the region. Program staff will continue to
identify clients not being sewed by existing public and private providers throughout the
region, administer indicated vaccines, provide appropriate medical and social service
referrals, and recruit and train qualified volunteers to help with the effort. Further, the
award will enable expanded efforts at improving service delivery, assessment, and
educational programs throughout the region.
The public health nurses receive clinical supervision from the director of Public
Health Nursing, and otherwise report to the health educator who, in tum, apprises the
State Immunization Program director of project activtlies through quarterly reports.
The public health nurses will attend State Immunization Program staff meetings.
