Item NO. 95-331
Date: 7-24-95
Item/Subject: Ordinance, establishing Annual Compensation of City
Council Members
Responsible Department: City Council
Commentary:
The City Council's ad hoc charter committee has reviewed a number of
issues relating to the City's charter. One of the issues which has
been reviewed is compensation for members of the City Council. The
existing City Charter calls for members of the City Council to
receive $400.00 per year in compensation. The 6harter also allows
for the City Council to Increase the amount of compensation by
ordinance provided, however, that such ordinance be approved by the
voters at a public referendum and that the change In compensation not
take place until three years after the date of adoption by the
Council. The current level of compensation appears to have been in
effect since the City Charter was originally adopted in 1935.
The attached ordinance increases Council member compensation to
$1,500.00 per year. In addition, the Chairman of the Council will
receive an additional $500.00 per year for a total of $2,000.00
compensation.
These levels were selected by the Committee based on information
regarding the level of compensation of other elected officials in
municipalities in this area and throughout the state.
