More than 100 States, counties, and cities have brought legal action against drug companies for their involvement in the opioid crisis seeking to recover damages for its financial impact. The citizens of the City of Bangor have also been affected by the opioid crisis and the action of drug companies and others, including financially and the City is entitled to compensation. This was reviewed at a Council Workshop. Committee Action Committee: Council Workshop, Executive Session Meeting Date: 12/04/2017 Action: Recommend for passage For: Against: Staff Comments & Approvals ljj:4 ro Lt�"' City Manager Introduced for: New Business City Solicitor Finance Director CITY OF BANGOR ORDER Date: 12/27/2017 Item No: 18-068 Assigned to Councilor: Nichols 12/27/2017 18-068 Authorizing the City Manager to Execute an Agreement with Napoli Shkolnik, PLLC and Trafton, Matzen, Belleau & Frenette, LLP on behalf of the City of Bangor to Initiate Litigation Against Drug Companies and Others Involved in Opiates WHEREAS, many residents of the City of Bangor have become addicted to painkillers manufactured by drug companies; and WHEREAS, Departments of the City, including the Police Department and Fire Department, are required to respond virtually daily to problems that arise because of addiction to pain killers; and WHEREAS, this has resulted in a significant financial impact on the City of Bangor. Be it Ordered by the City Council of the City of Bangor that, Catherine M. Conlow, City Manager,is hereby authorized on behalf of the City of Bangor to execute a legal services contract, and any other necessary and appropriate documents, to engage the services of Napoli Shkolnik, PLLC and Trafton, Matzen, Belleau & Frenette, LLP on behalf of the City of Bangor with respect to prosecution of any legal claims against manufacturers and distributors of opioids arising out of the manufacturers' and distributors' fraudulent and negligent marketing and distribution of opioids.
