Commentary:
This is the renewal of the MCR Grant which the City of Bangor has with the
Department of Human Services for support of the
Children's Dental Clinic.
" Mis is the third time the Department of Human Services
is awarding the
grant ona two year - renewal basis. This grant covers
the period from July
1. 1995 to June 30. 1997. The total amount of the
grant is $32,000 ($16,000/
year)

PROJECT SUMMARY: Total pediatric dental care including all
forms of restorative treatment, sealants and preventive
dental education are provided. Children uncer our care
return every 6 (six) months and sometimes more frequently
for oral instruction and frequent fluoride
applications Or prescriptions for home Use. Surgical
procedures, endodOntiCS, space maintenance, Minor
orthodontics and laboratory worka are done withinthe of I ice.
Very little specialty work is
referred to other
x
practitioners except for Grdmolar extractions. interesting
are photo documented for research and lecture
purposes. Many special needs children are
treated: tiny
infants and newborns, dental phobics of allages, children
with behavior management problems in the dental chair,
children with fetal alcohol syndrome, children that have
been molested Or beaten by their parent and/or by other
health professionals including dentists, children with
cerebral palsy, children with severe mental retardation,
children that are being treated for cancer, leukemia and
aids, children with severe craniofacial abnormalities and/or
Physical deformities and children with cleft lips and cleft
Palates that may or may not be undergoing treatment with the
proper medical teams necessary to treat their Conditions.
The Clinic also Operates the third lar t school dental
health education p n Maine, s i% approximately
2,200 children n grades K through S. Each of the 7
elementary schools are scheduled for dental health education
lectures. These lectures are on
variety of subject areas
and are grade specific. At thes same time, students who have
obvious dental needs or do not have e dentist are given a
flier with our Clinic information and phone number and
raged to call. Under the supervision o a teacher, are
a
weekly fluoride mouthrinse program is offered to stuaents
that have parental permission. At the end or, each school
Year the Clinic conducts a DMF Survey on a raccom sampling
of 5th grade students to help measure the effectiveness of
the school Program.
The Clinic organizes and participates in Many local events
Promoting dental health throughout the year. The staff
serves as Faculty Associates for the University College
Dental Health Program which uses the Clinic as
a training
facility. The Clinic s as an
extramuralrotation site

for the senior dental hygiene students and the dental
assistants in the Dental Health Programs at the University
college.
