HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-02-26 Recycling Committee Minutes Recycle Committee Meeting February 26, 1997 Members Present: Jim Ring, Arthur Stockus, Marilyn Ireland, Jerry Hughes, Bill Shook, Ray Bolduc, Bill Phillips, Kathy Guerin- Guests Raynette Boyington, Steve Boyington, Rita Helfen, Victoria Justice Call To Order: Jim Ring chaired the meeting and called the meeting to order at 5:30PM. Hazardous Waste Cleanup Days Kathy Guerin passed out a report of the Household Hazardous Waste Pilot Collection Program that was conducted in Lewiston in 1995. The report was prepared by the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments. The report was fairly detailed and provided needed information. Jim Ring suggested that the volume figures listed in appendix "A" of the report needed to be clarified. Kathy Guerin mentioned that Fergus Lee of AVCOG suggested that we may want to consider a program that would collect only paint and used motor oil. Kathy also mentioned that a paint ' collection program was conducted in Camden Rockport in recent years and that Barry Simmons, the retired director of the Camden Rockport Facility could provide us with some information of paint collection programs. Dick Stockford asked if there would be any advantage to doing a survey in the community regarding Hazardous Waste. The general consensus was that a survey may be beneficial. especially in the early planning stages of any collection program. Victoria Justice, Director of the Department of Environmental Heal & Safety at the University of Maine, offered her services regarding Hazardous Waste Collection. She experience in the field of Hazardous Waste and is currently handling the Hazardous Waste collection program at the University of Maine. Victoria mentioned that we may be able to combine efforts with the University to lower costs. Victoria suggested that and RFP's for Hazardous waste pick up be prepared properly and that she could assist us in this area. Choosing the correct Hazardous Waste Contractor is a must if the program is to be successful. Minutes: The minutes from the January 29. 1997 meeting were approved as written and will be placed on file. • Recycling Reports: Arthur Stockus provided the committee with a recycling report. Recycling tonnage from Bangor and outside communities continues to increase. Prices for plastic, office paper and cardboard are slowly rising. Newspaper has remained stable at$26.00 per ton. As of the end of January, 61%of anticipated recycling revenues have been received. Operating costs.for the Recycling Division are at 58%. Revenues including avoided costs for calendar year 1996 are presently $104,353. • Items For Next Agenda 1. Recycling Reports 2.
