HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-04-30 Recycling Committee Minutes 2C6 Recycling Committee Meeting April 30, 97 Members Present: Arthur Stockus, Jerry Hughes, Bill Shook, Marilyn Ireland, Dick Stockford, Jim Ring, Dick Unruh, Kathy Guerin, Guests- Royce Day & Martha Day. Call To Order: Jim Ring chaired the committee meeting and called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM. Minute Approval: The minutes from the March 26, 1997 meeting were approved as written and will be placed on file. Recycling Reports: Arthur Stockus explained that recycling processing tonnage was similar to March of 96 and that in March of 97, more material is coming to Bangor's facility from outside communities. The recycling center has reached 91% of anticipated revenue for this year. Avoided costs to date total $36,916.04. Operating costs to date are $145,606.00. With revenue from recycled products and avoided costs, approximately 2/3 of the recycling program is being covered by recycling revenues and avoided costs. Hazardous Waste Cleanup Day Jim Ring reminded committee members that hazardous waste cleanup was presently a non funded item. Jim also mentioned that the committee had previously decided to examine the possibility of a Hazardous Waste Cleanup Day and that consideration was given to starting off such a program with one or two items. Paints and motor oil seemed to be a good starting point. Arthur Stockus mentioned that the motor pool was now taking used motor oil and that motor pool personnel would be examining the motor oil for any contaminates such as antifreeze. Victoria Justus from the University of Maine provided the committee with advice and costs associated with collecting hazardous waste such as paints, oil. flammable solvents, pesticides and herbicides.. Note the following: Paints- $320.00- 55 Gallon Drum Used Motor Oil- $120.00- 55 Gallon Drum Flammable Solvents- $2.00 - $10.00 per pound Pesticides- $15.00 per pound and up Herbicides- $10.00- $15.00 per pound Victoria Justus cautioned committee members that liability is a concern. The first choice in handling hazardous waste is to reuse if possible, the second is to incinerate (clean burn) and the last choice is to deposit hazardous waste in a landfill.
