Councilman 95-69 I The School Dental Health Education Program (SDHEP) managed by the Maine Department of Human Services, Bureau of Health, Division of Dental Health, provides a state-wide coordinated approach for delivering primary preventive measures: dental health education and fluoride supplements (fluoride mouthrinse and/or fluoride tablets) with parental permission to children in grades M-6. A weekly 0.22 fluoride mouthrinse in flavored, premixed individual cups is available to all participating schools. A daily fluoride tablet is provided in nonfluoridated communities or in schools with suboptimal fluoride levels. All families using well water must submit the results of a well water test for fluoride prior to a child's participation in the fluoride tablet component. It is also expected that a classroom education component is provided to all children in schools participating in the program. Educational materials and curricula are available from the Division of Dental Health as well as from other sources. Dental health concepts should be an integral part of the mandatory school health education curriculum.
