Commentary:
This is the renewal of the grant for the School Dental Program offered to
students in grades K - 5 in > elementary schools in the City of Bangor.
The amount of this year's grant is $2.970. These funds ate
used to educate
all studentsand to maintain a high level of dental health
a
awareness, to
maintain ant
80-85% participation rate in the fluoride program in eligible
schools and to be sure that all low Income rmedicaid children are
aware of theservices provided by the nBangor Children's Dental Clinic and
encourage than to take advantage of the service.
Two schools. Fruit Street and lath Street, continue t0 not meet the income
levels necessary for the State to provide free fluoride. These levels are
determined by the number of children in a school who qualify for free o
reduced fee lunches. The School Department has been notified of this exclusion
and each year has agreed to purchase flouride for these schools.

The School Dental Health Education Program (SDHEP) managed
by the Maine Department of Human Services, Bureau of Health,
Division of Dental Health, provides a state-wide coordinated
approach for delivering primary preventive measures: dental
health education and fluoride supplements (fluoride mouthrinse
and/or fluoride tablets) with parental permission to children in
grades M-6. A weekly 0.22 fluoride mouthrinse in flavored,
premixed individual cups is available to all participating
schools. A daily fluoride tablet is provided in nonfluoridated
communities or in schools with suboptimal fluoride levels. All
families using well water must submit the results of a well water
test for fluoride prior to a child's participation in the
fluoride tablet component.
It is also expected that a classroom education component is
provided to all children in schools participating in the program.
Educational materials and curricula are available from the
Division of Dental Health as well as from other sources. Dental
health concepts should be an integral part of the mandatory
school health education curriculum.
