1. Griffin Road -Maine Avenue Traffic Problem. Jim ming, Public Warks
Director, reviewed the details of the propmed installation of traffic
Signals and indicated the approximate cost is $20,000, which will he paid
cut of Airport funds. The Committee approved the project.
2. Washington Street Bridge Lm,rovarents. Walter Won, Assistant City
rwineeI, explained va[icus imprnrevents to be made by the MoJ on the
Washington Street Bridge. This item was on the spells for informational
purposes only.
3. Taxicab Use of Fire Hydrant spaces. The Committee discussed a previous
recommndat
eion that taxicabs be authorized use of hydrant spaces in the
downtown area.. The recommendation race from the Public Safety Cuumittee
last year at a time when a nwmher of parking spaces had been eliminated from
the doantwn area. Chief Burke strongly disagrees with the suggestion
indicating it would interfere with fire safety. Stockfond agreed also
saying that the general public would take advantage of the empty spaces.
Councilor Blanchette made a motion, and the cawittee agreed, not to
recommend taxicab use of fire hydrant spaces.
4. loading and Traffic Considerations Resulting from Mail Order Business on
Main Street. Carol fabella, Downtown Manager, expressed concern over
standard shoe's recent expansion of their mail order business at their Main
Street location. She has received endless complaints regarding delivery,
trucks duple parking as well as boxes being piled up on the sidewalk area.

it required pedestrians to move off the sidewalk and to walk on the street.
The Ceamlttee agreed to postpone this item to [hair February 22nd meeting
and asked Gut representatives of Standard shoe be invited to attend the
meeting.
5. Invitation to Meeting with Cities of Old Town and Brewer re: Cable TV
Franchise Agreement. The Committee agreed that the City should hB
represented and ask that the City Meager affirmatively respond to Cavid
Cole, Old Town City Manager, and to find out tM location of Ge meeting.
6. Special Committee Meeting. The Governmental Operations Committee will
be meeting on Rebruary 1st at 4:30 p.m. to discuss (1) Discharge of Firearas
Ordinance; 2) Pacycling of Solid Waste.

T. Miscellaneous Itece.
a. Councilor England asked about the problem of school buses turning
into the Y parking lot m Court Street. The issue was discussed at the
Public Safety Crnmittee last year. Tfie Comnittee agreed with the Chief
Stxkford's recommendation to eliminate one parking spaoe (to be determined
by the Chief) on Ixna side of the YMCA parking lot entrance up from Command!
Street. The action will require a Council Order to be prepared for the
uposning agenda. The Cannittx asked that appropriate staff £ran the IdM
W notified. Chief Stxkford will contact the ]TMA.
b. basil Chair Sullivan and Chief Steckford discussed a. raluest
ceived by the City Manager's Office frau Sack Cashman for parking spaces
on Ouon Street, between First and Sxrnd Street, to acmimNate businesses
in the Earner Legion Building. 11w_ Committee agreed with the Chief's
recrnmeMatim for two-lhour parking in this area. M appropriate Council
Order needs W be prepared for the Council agenda.
c. Stxkford informed the Cannittee of an item which will appear on
their Wonting Council agenda to adjust the handicap parking waiver to $50.
