TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, March 8, 1976
The Transportation Committee of the City Council convened at 9:50
a.m. on March 8 with the following present:
Arthur P. Brownies, Committee Chairman
James S. Bigney, Committee Member
Patricia A. Finnigan, Committee Member
William Hunt, Director, Transit Division
Edward MBxsimic, Director, Central Services
Peter D'Errico, Manager, Airport Department
Merle F. Goff, City Manager-
" James Finkle, City Manager Intern
The purpose of the Committee is to determine if it is feasible to
advertise on Citibus equipment, to help alleviate the growing
deficit.
Councilor Finnigan had the following ideas to submit:
1. Promote a BIDE AND .SHOP plan with the Bangor Merchants,
where the merchant would defray some or all of the cost
of riding Citibus. This could be accomplished by a
validation of the bus ticket as is done in the case of
PARE 'N SHOP.
2. Promote a system of advertising on the buses in order
to provide much needed revenue, utilizing all available
spaces on the buses for this purpose.-
. 3. Promote a bus .ride lottery, where the rider would be
given a numbered ticket each time he rides.The. Bus
Department or some other agency would then, on a con-
sistent or regular basis, draw from this pool. The
winner would then be given the prize of riding free on
the Citibus for a stated period of time.
4, book into the redesign of the buses so that they would
be available to transport suitcases or small items of
merchandise. _
Councilors Brountas and Bigney generally agreed to the major points
and requested that the staff look into the coat and availability of
proper fittings for the display of advertising on the outsideas
well as the inside of the buses. Mr. Maxsimic and Mr. D'Errico
will coordinate this portion of the project.
Also discussed were the problems sometimes associated with hand
radios being played by the bug drivers. Mr. Goff requested that
Mr. Hunt have this practice discontinued.
Mr. Maxsimie told the Committee that they would be informed as to
his findingsassoon as he receives that information.
Councilor Brountas thanked all for attending.
The meeting adjourned at 10:40 a.m.
