HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-09-22 Airport Committee MinutesY AIRPORT COMMITTEE MEETING A meeting of the Bangor City Council Airport Committee was held on Monday, August 22, 1988 at 4 PM at the City Council Chambers. Present were: Mary Sullivan, Chairperson Arthur Tilley Patricia Blanchette -Edward Barrett Edward McKeon Peter D'EYrlco Absent: Jane Saxl Item Al - Cole's Express Use Request on Light -Duty Aircraft Ramp. This request had previously been before the Committee on May 5th. Economic Development Director, Edward McKeon, stated Cole's Express has recently hired Alan Campbell as the Director of the Cold's Training School and he will be setting up the training program. The company is requesting to lease between 2jand G acres behind the Public Works area and outside of the security fence around the perimeter of the airport. The company would be responsible for cleaning the area, no permanent structure would beconstructed on site as had previously been requested, and would be for aone-year period with a 30 -day vacate notice. Mr. Alan Campbell informed the Committee that Cole's would like to lease this area until their company's own facilities on the Perry Road are completed. He said they temporarily needed a paved area on which students could practice maneuvering tractor -trailers. The Committee unanimously approved this request. o Q. (Minutes continued) 2 Item 42 - Status of Eastern Express Convairs. Airport Manager, Peter D'Errico briefed the Committee on previous correspondence to Eastern Express regarding the unserviceable Convairs parked near the General Aviation Building. Mr. Allyn Caruso, President of Eastern Express informed the Committee that the company has been trying to sell these Convairs since 1984. Mr. Caruso continued to say that he feels that as the company is based at BIA, the aircraft they are marketing should be nearby.in order for them to sell. He explained they have money tied up in these aircraft and they are anxious to sell them; he would prefernotto pay rent for parking these aircraft but would if necessary. Be would be agreeable to move these aircraft to a different location on the airport and Mr.'D'Errico will seek other alternative locations. Councilor Tilley feels that Eastern Express is an asset to the City of Bangor and that we allow this company a spIPcified time to remove the aircraft, .after which time the airline will be charged for the storage of the planes pending their sale. After some discussion, it was unanimously approved to grant a nine-month grace period to Eastern Express before instituting a parking fee for these aircraft. a Item 43 - Aerofusion Sign Request. Mr. D'Errico gave the Committee a brief background on Aerofusi?n erecting a sign on the hangar without first obtaining a permit from Code Enforcement. Subsequently, the sign permit was denied by Code Enforcement and Aerofusion is going through the Appeals process. Regardless of the decision of the Zoning Board of Appeals, this sign request will require approval from the Airport Committee. Meeting adjourned at 5 P.M. b 0
