1. Commission approved minutes of April 16, 2008 meeting with no changes.
2. Council appropriation for FY09
The rising cost of oil has negatively affected the City’s budget. The Council had
to make some very difficult decisions this year, and as a result, the appropriation
for the Cultural Commission was reduced from $125,000 to $100,000 this fiscal
year.
3. Review of recommendations by the Programs and Grants Committee
The Programs and Grants Committee met at 7am on July 23, 2008 to discuss two
st
grant applications for the July 1 deadline.
Penobscot Theatre Company – Request for $25,000 to partially fund the
production of State of the Union. The Grants Committee noted that this was a
very well written application. Strengths included significant outreach to the
public and committed support from the Maine Arts Commission and the National
Endowment for the Arts. Unanimous vote to recommend full funding of
$25,000 to the Bangor City Council.
Bangor Center Corporation – request for $2,000 to fund City Hall performances
and audio/visual for Downtown Countdown. Strengths included a wide variety of
free family-oriented New Year’s entertainment designed to encourage participants
to enjoy several venues throughout downtown. Unanimous vote to recommend
full funding of $2,000 to the Bangor City Council.
4. Schedule Website Subcommittee meeting
Carlisle and Breen are on the Website Subcommittee. Since Breen was not in
attendance, Bilancia will contact them via email to schedule. First draft of our
grant application to Maine Arts Commission will be presented at the October
meeting.
