HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-07-22 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes City of Bangor, Commission on Cultural Development Programs & Grants Subcommittee -Minutes- July 22, 2009, 12:00 Noon C&ED Conference Room Commissioners in Attendance: Susan Jonason, Subcommittee Chair; John Rohman, Commission Chair and Robert Zavaleta Others in Attendance: Rod McKay, City of Bangor Director of Community & Economic Development; Scott Levy, Producing Artistic Director of Penobscot Theatre; Rosalyn Phillips, Dept. of C&ED Handouts: Brochures from Penobscot Theatre Next Meeting Date: July 30, 2009 at 8 am, City Hall Council Chambers 1. Penobscot Theatre Grant Application – Scott Levy Scott Levy reviewed his application and the content of the production “Spunk”. Total Project Cost is $128,000. Penobscot Theatre is requesting $25,000 in a grant from the Commission on Cultural Development, to assist with the costs associated with this production. Chair Susan Jonason asked Scott if this production is not able to obtain all of its projected funding will the production still go on. Scott replied ‘yes’ that it will still go on. Also, Scott stated that the decision by NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) to assist with funding is pending until Nov. 2009. Scott also showed an 8 minute documentary of the “State of Union” that he had produced. He also requested that on the Agenda for the full board meeting (scheduled for July 30) that an item be added for review of the Maine Arts Commission Grant w/ the Downtown Bangor Cultural group. (Scott then left the meeting.) Discussion continued among the members present on the funds available and the other possibilities on upcoming grant requests by other area groups. A motion was then made by John Rohman and seconded by Robert Zavaleta to recommend to the full board of the Cultural Commission to grant $15,000 to The Penobscot Theatre. The full board will meet on July 30, 2009 at 8 am, City Hall Council Chambers to consider this recommendation. Meeting adjourned at 1:00 pm.
