HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-01-14 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes City of Bangor, Commission on Cultural Development January 14, 2016 8:30 a.m. Council Chambers, City Hall Commissioners Present: Kierie Piccininni (Chair), David Zelz, Marianne Lynch, Stephanie Harp, Elisabeth Young, Kat Johnson, Mary Budd, Heather Magee, Emily Burnham, and Tanya Emery (interim staff) Guests: Jane Bragg (Bangor Ballet), Brian Heinrich (BSO), Kate Dickerson (MSF), Lori Wingo (Bangor Band) Absent: Tom Avila, excused 1. Welcome & Introductions 2. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes Commissioner Burnham made a motion to accept the previous meeting minutes and Commissioner Lynch seconded. Vote unless doubted, motion has passage. 3. Grant applications a. Bangor Symphony Orchestra Commissioners heard from Brian Heinrichs, Executive Director of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, in support of their application for the On the Town program. b. Maine Science Festival Kate Dickerson, Exec Dir of the Maine Science Festival, discussed their application for funds to support the general operations of the Festival. c. Bangor Ballet Jane Bragg, Executive Director of the Bangor Ballet, reviewed their application for funds to support ballet programming for students at Downeast School. d. Bangor Band Lori Wingo, President of the Bangor Band, discussed the band’s application for funds to support R. B. Hall Day. There will be another round of grants with submissions in April 2016, with review/approval by the Commission in May. Commissioner Johnson moved funding Bangor Ballet $1518, seconded by Commissioner Burnham, vote unless doubted. Commissioner Boothby abstained. Commissioner Harp moved funding the Maine Science Festival at $2500, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. Motion withdrawn so Bangor Band could be discussed first. Commissioner Burnham recommended funding Bangor Band at $1250, vote unless doubted. Commissioner moved funding the Maine Science Festival at $2500, seconded by Commissioner Burnham, vote unless doubted. Commissioner Young moved funding the Bangor Symphony at $2500, seconded by Commissioner Johnson, vote unless doubted. Funding Recap: Bangor Band $1250, Bangor Symphony $2500, Maine Science Festival $2500, Bangor Ballet $1518 4. Grant Report Review – Detritus Chair Picininni reviewed the grant report and materials submitted by Detritus. 5. Committee Assignments and Work Session Dates The roster of committee assignments was reviewed: Funding – Commissioners Budd, Avila-Beck, and Harp Advocacy – Commissioners Budd, Avila-Beck, and Lynch Education – Commissioners Johnson and Zelz Marketing – Commissioners Young, Burnham, and Johnson Cultural Vibrancy – Commissioner Magee, Zelz, Harp, Boothby 6. Other Business General discussion of announcements and events followed. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:15 am.
