HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-08-11 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes City of Bangor, Commission on Cultural Development August 11, 2016 8:30 a.m. Council Chambers, City Hall Commissioners Present: Kierie Piccininni (Chair), David Zelz, Mary Budd, Heather Magee, Judy Boothby, Elisabeth Young, Emily Burnham, Stephanie Harp, and Zeth Lundy (staff) Excused Absent: Tom Avila, Marianne Lynch 1. Welcome and Introductions Chair Piccininni announced that Tom Avila will be resigning his seat on the Commission due to a change in his role at work. 2. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes June and July meeting minutes approved. 3. ARTober Planning Discussion re: bringing on Launchpad as a planning/production/fiscal partner. Josh Gass, board chair of Launchpad, spoke to Commission re: Launchpad’s mission and potential involvement with ARTober, looking at the month-long fest from a sustainability perspective and a steering committee to look at its future arc. Audience member Councilor Gibran Graham on hand to ask about ARTober budget and needs in general. Piccininni: budget talks and general needs discussed at past CCD meetings, available on video. Budget for ARTober in C&ED office w/ city staff liaison. Reminder that CCD does not make its own decisions all the time, only recommendations; a lot of things need to go before BED committee (and sometimes, City Council). Audience member Sandy Fortin from non-profit Green Gem Holistic Healing Oasis (and BRLI alum) interested in being involved, reminder that there are places like hers outside of Downtown that would like to be involved. Piccininni requested motion to move forward with CCD/Launchpad collaboration – Young motioned, Burnham seconded, unanimous vote. CCD will draft memo to distribute to staff and various committees. 4. Committee Updates Education: next workshop in October re: grant writing, happening one month before final grants deadline. Advocacy: AEP5 moving along. Vibrancy: St. John’s Organ Society’s ongoing presentation and performances. 5. Other business Budd: Transformer Tales launching tonight, original youth production at Penobscot Theatre in partnership with Penobscot Nation. Shows all weekend at Bangor Opera House, Indian Island, and Bar Harbor.
