HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-06-09 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes City of Bangor, Commission on Cultural Development June 9, 2016 8:30 a.m. Council Chambers, City Hall Commissioners Present: Kierie Piccininni (Chair), Emily Burnham, Judy Boothby, Heather Magee, Mary Budd, and Zeth Lundy (staff) Excused Absent: Josh Plourde, David Zelz, Marianne Lynch, Elisabeth Young, Tom Avila, Stephanie Harp 1. Welcome and Introductions 2. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes May’s meeting was cancelled, so no minutes to approve. 3. Grant Application Review – Penobscot Theatre Mary Budd gave overview of Transformer Tales: Stories from the Dawnland, Penobscot Theatre’s world-premiere production in association with Penobscot Nation. The combination of Penobscot origin tales is proposed to engage 35-50 kids with hope for a truly diverse student population including outreach to Indian Island and community. Program includes field trip to museum on Indian Island, hearing from tribal elders, and classes on history/culture/music of Penobscot Nation. Culminate with two performances at Bangor Opera House, and then tour production to both Indian Island and Blackwoods Ampitheater at Acadia National Park as part of their 100-year celebration. Chair Piccininni moved to grant Penobscot Theatre $2000 instead of $1500 requested amount. Unanimous vote to send to Business & Economic Development committee for approval. 4. Waterfront Concerts Mural Project Tabled to July’s meeting – Elisabeth Young not present at meeting to lead discussion. 5. Intro to Historic Preservation Committee HPC chair Liz Rettenmaier not present at meeting to engage in discussion re: connecting CCD to groups like HPC to partner and have full communication on projects such as public murals. Conversation tabled until a further time. 6. ARTober Emily discussed feedback at forum, and that we are still looking for more funding. Chair Piccininni noted a remaining balance of $1360 from last year. 7. Committee Updates Education: working on getting materials together for workshop in July. Lining up panelists for fall workshop. Advocacy: Annual forum featured 47 attendees. Some feedback included create more updates, communication, and engage cultural leaders. AEP5 surveys still rolling in for this quarter. Cultural Vibrancy: bridge mural project currently on hold. 8. Other Business Judy: Robinson Ballet and Bangor Ballet’s executive and artistic directors all retired this spring, and she would like to recommend that the City send them all a “certificate of appreciation” for their contribution to City culture and arts. Going forward, anyone in a similar position should get similar recognition. Judy moved, Emily seconded, voted unanimous.
