HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-06-08 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes City of Bangor, Commission on Cultural Development June 8, 2017 8:30 a.m. Council Chambers, City Hall Commissioners Present: Mary Budd (Chair), Stephanie Harp (Vice Chair), Liam Riordan, Allen Adams, Kim Stewart, Jared Hunnefeld, Marianne Lynch, Zeth Lundy (staff) Excused Absent: Amy Blackstone, Owen Smith, David Zelz, Elisabeth Young Unexcused Absent: 1. Welcome and Introductions Chair Mary Budd called the meeting to order. 2. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes Approval of May . 3. Grant Applications Penobscot Theatre Co.: Mary gave overview of $2,000 request to help fund the PTCs Dramatic Academy Summer Session 2: Something Wicked This Way Comes. This youth summer theatre program, for kids aged 4-20, will work on producing and performing an adaptation of Ray Bradburys Something Wicked This Way Comes. Students will learn about many aspects of theatre production including voice, movement, improvisation, set design and construction, props, lighting, sound, and much more. Due to renovations at the Bangor Opera House this summer, the program must be relocated to Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High School the fee to use that space is what the CCDs funding would help to cover. Bangor Historical Society: Melissa Gerety of the BHS gave an overview of grant application for Drums on the Penobscot: A Civil War Experience, which is happening July 28-30 at the University of Maine Augustas Bangor campus. This reenactment event will include presentations, interactive visitor drills, childrens activities, and much more. The CCD grant app will help to pay for UMA campus rental fees. Commissioners agreed that this is another example of a great opportunity that helps expand the sorts of cultural opportunities that can be funded. Liam pointed out that he would like to see collaboration with academics as well. Both grant applications received unanimous approval from commission, and will next go before the Business & Economic Development Committee on June 20. 4. AEP5 update AEP5 personalized report for Bangor was recently delivered by Americans for the Arts th its public release has been embargoed until June 17. We will deliver summary version of report at next CCD monthly meeting, followed by presentation at Business & Economic Development committee, as well as press releases and media outreach. Discussed replacing some of the national quotes and photos with local quotes and photos. Mary and Zeth to work together in the next week to put together a brief statement that can be used by everyone to solicit quotes brainstormed a short-list of local notables who could be asked. 5. Committee updates Funding: finishing up revisions to the grant application process, which Stephanie will deliver to Zeth by Tuesday of next week so that he can get it on the agenda for the next Business & Economic Development committee meeting. ARTober: working on follow-up meeting with Andrea Beaulieu at Studio Linear to talk about RFP Andrea just had her baby a little earlier than expected Kim will be reaching out to find where we stand and when they can get together. 6. Other Business Zeth mentioned a recent presentation about the CCD at the Maine Career Connect. Also there was a question about the CCD and Facebook can it have its own Facebook page? Probably not, where it is an official committee of the City of Bangor?
