RE: MORE COPS!
On December 20,1995, I was notified by the US Department of Justice that our application for three
additionel police officers had been approved. This menu we now have federal funding for five police
officers.
As I recall, the Municipal Operations Committee requested that we apply for the three new officers
and then come back to them if they were approved.
The first two officers are being funded from April 1995 to April 1998. The three new positions are
being funded from January 1996 to January 1999. As of this date we have not hired any of the
officers. Two should be hired by the end of this month If we were to hire the three new poeiRons,
they would probably be filled in April, 1996.
These federally funded officers must be used in specific community policing programs. I would
anticipate that we will use at least one as a liaison with the dues high schools in the City. Two may be
necessary for tide program. We could also use these offices to expand ore bike patrol program. One
officer could be used as a victim advocate. This officer would weak with the victims to help them find
housing, deal with testifying w court, keeping them updated on the progress of the investigation, etc.
Below is what I anticipate the casts would be over this fiscal year and the next four fiscal years.
