Authorize the City Engineer to begin the Process to Discontinue a Portion of Summer Street Right -Of -Way
Summary
The Order would authorize the City Engineer to begin the process to discontinue a portion of
Summer Street. Several years ago the City of Bangor made significant improvements to the
intersection of Cedar Street and Main Street in anticipation of closing Summer Street. The purpose
was to reroute heavy vehicular traffic and trucks traveling to Routes 9 and 1A away from Railroad
Street, which serves as the main gateway to the waterfront.
Recently, Bangor Savings Bank purchased a majority of the property adjacent to Summer Street and
are in the planning process for developing a campus plan to serve as the Bank's main headquarters.
The discontinuance of this portion of Summer Street provides Bangor Savings Bank with more
flexibility in developing their Campus Plan while also promoting Railroad Street as a more pedestrian
friendly corridor to serve as the major entrance to the City's waterfront.
Staff recommends approval as This discontinuance will provide a much-needed separation between
traffic intending to utilize Route 9 and Route 1A and pedestrian and vehicular traffic destined for the
City waterfront.
