Item/Subjece RESOLVE: Recognizing the Accomplishments of the 199697 Bangor High School
Math Team

Couuneatury: Councilor Woodcock requested the attached Resolve recognizing the 1996-99 Bangor
High School Math Team. Among the teampnumwous accomplishments are: All Class Math State
Chroniclers for the second year in arow; first place in the Annual State Math Meet participation in the
New England boo atiostal Mathematics Contest; the selection of five team members to represent Maine in
the National Mathematics Composition; and maccous individual honors.
It should also be noted that Bangor High's success in maNematics extends beyond the Team. More that
150 students participated in the New England Mathematics League in which Bangor High placed first in
Maine and Ned for ninth out of 187 schools in New England, placutg hot ahead of Phillipa Exeter.
Bangor High was also first in Maine tu the American Hipp School Math Exam.
These successes are the resch of great individual effort and commitment on the part of the students, the
quality of math inunction offered by teachers throughout the school system, and the overall commitment _
to excellence exemplified by the Bangor School Depamnent.

Math Team

RRSOLVRD.
WHEREAS, the Bangor High School Math Team captured the coveted All Class Math State
Championship for the second year in amw during the 1996-1997 wheal year; and
WHEREAS, the team won this distinction in competition with more than one hundred teams throughout
the State,, and
WHEREAS, the team also placed fust among the eighty-six teams competing in the =us[ State meet
held at the Bangor Auditorium; and
WHEREAS, the teem was also selectN to compete in the New England invitational Mathematics
Contest in Canton, Massachusetts where it was the highest scoring Maine team and pieced
near the top of the fifty-six selected teems; and
WHEREAS; five Bangor High School Student%Iain Becker, Marie Blaoke, Lewis Kotredes, Robert
Kowede%and Zachary Shubett wave chosen m represent Maine in the National
Mathematics Competition at Penn State in lune;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR,
THAT: we hereby recognize the accomplishments of the members of the 1996-1997 Bmgor High
School Math Team for their outstanding performance and success. Then academic achievements
continue the tradition of excellence established by the Bangor School Department and resect well
upon their teachers, the School Department, their families, and out community. Through then
¢Hors, they have brought honor and recognition to the academic excellence of the Bmgor School
Deportment amW have act new stMards for all of our studems to pursue in the future.
