At its August 21 meeting, the Government Operations Committee was presented with a resolve from representatives of the Penobscot Nation to officially recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day in Bangor. The Councilors, staff and residents of Bangor recognize that the Bangor Region, comprises, in part the homelands of Indigenous Peoples including the four Tribes of the Wabanaki (Peno)scot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, aIiseet), their allies, and ancestors. Indigenous Peoples' Day will provide an opportunity for our community to recognize and celebrate the Indigenous Peoples of our region. Nichols Recognizing the Second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples` Day WHEREAS, Columbus Day was made a Federal Holiday in 1937 to be celebrated on the second Monday of October; and WHEREAS,, the Bangor City Council has been asked to recognize the Indigenous People here prior to and during the colonization begun by Christopher Columbus in the Western Hemisphere; and WHEREAS, there is ample local evidence demonstrating this area has been inhabited for millennia, long before Europeans began to settle in Bangor; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor recognizes that this area comprises in part the homelands of Indigenous Peoples including the four Tribes of the Wabanak*1 (Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmacjr, Maliseet), their allies, and ancestors; and WHEREAS,, Indigenous Peoples' Day will provide an opportunity for our community to recognize and celebrate the Indigenous Peoples of our region, in concert with similar celebrations elsewhere; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor encourages schools, other educational i other institutions to recognize and celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, Be it Resolved by the City Council of the City of Bangor that,, nstitutions businesses, and The second Monday of October shall be known in the City of Bangor as Indigenous Peoples' Day IN CITY COUNCIL AUGUST 28, 2017 CR 17-315 MOTION MADE AND SECONDED FOR PASSAGE PASSED �J zrad,..„...:„...)
