Bangor has a large foodservice industry. There are approximately 180 establishments in Bangor licensed to serve food to the public. This figure doesn't include schools, institutions, and community organizations that prepare and serve food accessory to their primary mission. In conjunction with National Rood Safety Math, a number of educational outreach programs are planned. WHEREAS. September marks the fourth actual National Food Safety Education Month, sponsored by the International Food Safety Council. WHEREAS, President Clinton's National Food Safety Initiative recognizes end!. encourages observance of the National Food Safety Education Mouth. WHEREAS, The goals of National Food Safety Education Month are: 1'i To emphasize food safety education and training amoung restaurant and foodservice managers and employees. 1. To build public awareness and understanding of the restaurant and foodservice iMustry'ecommitment to serving safe food. 3. To educate.. the public to handle aM prepare food properly at home, by using the same tecMiques practiced in professional kitchens. WHEREAS. In recognition of the tireless efforts made by the dedicated women and men who are trained to prepare and handle food safely in the restaurants. supermarkets, school cafeterias, hospitals -everywhere food is served in this city. THEREFORE, RE IT RESOLVED BY TEE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, THAT: Wd are pleased to join with the International Food Safety Council, the Maine Restaurant Association, and the state and local health departments that protect citizens In this state from foodborne illness, in recognizing September 1998 a Food Safety education Month In the City of Bangor. We encourage citizens of Bangor to take part in becoming educated and trained In food safety. This mouth -long observance Is dedicated to focusing attention on the importance of safe food handling and preparation efforts now and throughout the year.
