WHEREAS, on Friday, November 14,1997, personnel of the Bangor Police Department responded to baniceded suspect cal); and WHEREAS, during a 4.5 how period, due ampect fired approximately 20 shots, many directed at Police persomel; and WHEREAS,. Officer Mark Hathaway played a pivotal role in negotiating with the suspect and convincing him to peacefully surrender; and WHEREAS, the calm and professional response of our Police psmomel, assisted by personnel of the Maine Stele Police, Penobscot County Sheriffs Department, mrd Brewer Police Department, was essential in protecting the safety of citizens in the area and bringing this situation to a Peaceful and sae resolution; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, THAT: we hereby recognize and commend the professiomhsm and discipline shown by all of the law enforcement persormel involved in the incident on Friday, November 14, 1997. We particularly commend Officer Mark Hathaway for his negotiating skills; the officers m the scene who exercised significant tommint under fire; and tome who assisted ow Department in these efforts. The behavior of those individuals exemplifies their courage, dedication on, the safety of the public, and high degree of heading and professionalism. It reflects well on the leadership of the Department, [M quality and for dedication of all Department persomel.
