HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-05-31 School Committee Minutes MINUTES BANGOR SCHOOL COMMITTEE REGULAR MEETING 7:00 p.m.,Wednesday,May 31,2017 School Committee Members present: Chairman Warren Caruso,Brian Doore,Jennifer DeGroff,and Sue wereunableattend. .Members Sue Hawes,Marlene Susi,and Caryn Sychterz to A. 1.&2. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Caruso at 7:02 p.m. and the Pledge of Allegiance followed. 3.a. The Bangor School Department and the Bangor School Committee recognized James Fahey,a James F. Doughty School 8th grader,for his achievement as a gold medal winner at the National History Day at the University of Maine. b. The Bangor School Department and the Bangor School Committee recognized Erin McCarthy, a Grade 8 student, as the first place winner in the Maine State Middle School Science Fair for her piece entitled, "Instrumental Music, Instrumental to the Mind?" c. The Bangor School Department and the Bangor School Committee recognized the first place winner at the Northern New England Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at UNH, Spencer Campbell,a student at Bangor High. d. The Bangor School Department and the Bangor School Committee recognized Shayna Coombs, a Bangor High senior, as a member of the State Champion LifeSmarts team,sponsored through UTC. e. The Bangor School Department and the Bangor School Committee recognized, Douglas Ferguson, the winner of the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA) Award for Excellence in Middle Level Athletic Administration. B. Superintendent Webb requested to amend the agenda in order to add D.2.c. Report of Reassignment and E.1.c.1.2.Extra Duty Assignments 2017-2018. VOTED 4-0 to amend the agenda as requested. D. 2.a. Similar to the Superintendent's Award given to Bangor High School Seniors earlier in March,the 2017 Sophomore Award of Academic Excellence recognizes sophomores who have accepted the challenge of honor level courses and achieved at a high level. Assistant Superintendent MacDonald provided a brief overview of the award and read the names into the record of the students to the program. b. Superintendent Webb reported the following resignation(s): Stephanie Johnston Special Education Teacher Downeast School Felecia Dicker Freshman Class Advisor Bangor High School Annemarie Roberts IEP Coordinator(.66) Mary Snow School Minutes,Regular Meeting,May 31,2017 2. c. Superintendent Webb reported the following teacher reassignment(s) for 2017- 2018: Sandra Seavey from Special Education Self-Contained Room Teacher at Mary Snow School to Special Education Resource Room Teacher at Bangor High School E. 1.a. 1. The Committee tabled the draft Minutes of the May 15, 2017 Regular School Committee Meeting till the next meeting. b. 1. Superintendent Webb recommended approval of the March 2017 Financial Report. VOTED 4-0 to approve the financial statement as presented. 2. Superintendent Webb recommended approval of the May Bid & Quotation Report. VOTED 4-0 to approve the Bid&Quotation Report as presented. c. 1. a. Superintendent Webb recommended the following Teacher nomination(s) for the 2017-2018 school year,with a one-year Probationary Contract: Maynard Walton,Jr.,Math/Science Teacher at SPRPCE Innovation School Danielle Loggans, Special Education RR Teacher at Fairmount School Kristi Morrow,Grade 4 Teacher at Mary Snow School Nathan Cutting,English Teacher at SPRPCE Innovation School Erin Brousseau, Guidance Counselor at Fruit Street School & Abraham Lincoln School VOTED 4-0 to approve the nominations as presented. 2. Superintendent Webb recommended committee approval of the following Extra- Duty Assignments for school year 2017-2018 Math Dept. Head(.5) Bangor High School Michael Cornell Math Dept. Head(.5) Bangor High School Eric Steadman VOTED 4-0 to approve the assignments. d. Committee Member Jennifer DeGroff shared the following donation: To Mary Snow School,an anonymous cash donation having a total dollar value of $340. VOTED 4-0 to receive the donation with thanks. e. 1. Superintendent Webb recommended approval of the second reading of revised Policy EPD Meal Charging Procedure. Minutes,Regular Meeting,May 31,2017 3. Committee Member DeGroff asked questions about alternate meals. VOTED 4-0 to approve the policy as presented. E. 2.a. 1-2. Superintendent Webb recommended receipt of first reading of policies DJC Bidding Requirements and DJH Purchasing and Contracting Procurement Staff Code of Conduct. Superintendent Webb shared that at 2:00 p.m. that day, the School Department was notified that the new federal policy expectations had been delayed by one year. Superintendent Webb would seek more guidance before determining whether to move forward with the second reading or to wait until the following year. VOTED 4-0 to receive the first readings as presented with the recommendation to consider including domestic partner in the immediate family definition if moving forward with a second reading. F. Committee Member Sorg shared that the UTC Board learned of the nine members nominated into the National Technical Honor Society from UTC were Bangor High students. H. Chairman Caruso reviewed the important dates. Chairman Caruso encouraged voters to vote on the School Budget on June 13th at the Cross Insurance Center. J.
