Commentary:
The Commission on Cultural Development's mission is to promote the development of ganga as a
regional arts center that nurtures the artistic and cuftual expression of Its diverse peoples. The
Commission has been authorizetl by the City Council to review applications to the City for funding from
arts and cultural organiations and to recommend a course of action to the City Council for their review
and consideration.
The Penobscot Theatre Company submitted an application for $25,000 to partially fund a $95,500
production of an American Masterpiece "State of the UmW combined whh a voter registration drive and
anallary non-partisan election actiAtes.
The Commission noted that the biggest strengths of this application include significant outreach to the
public and committed support from the Maine Arts Commission and National Endowment for the Arts.
The Commission for Cultural Development recommends that the City Council approve a gram of $25,000

(TITLE.) ORDER, Awarding Grant to the Penobscot Theatre Company for $25,000
W Partially Fund the Production of 'State of the Union"
WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Developmenfs mission is to promote the
development of Bangor as a regional arts center that nurtures the artistic and
cultural expression of Its diverse peoples; and
WHEREAS, the Commission is authortzad to review grant applications from arts and cultural
organizations and recommend a course of action to the City Council for Meir
review and comodenmon; and
WHEREAS, the Penobscot Theatre Company submitted an application for $25,000 to
partially fund production of an American Masterpiece "State of the Union"
combined with a voter registra0on drive and ancillary non-partisan election
activities; and
WHEREAS, the Commission noted in its review process that the project met funding criteria
and the application was complete, and no material weaknesses were noted in
either the project description or the application; and
WHEREAS, the Commission noted that strengths of Mis application include significant
outreach to the public and committed support from the Maine Arts Commission
and National Endowment for the Arts:
BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR THAT
$25,000 be granted to the Penobscot Theatre Company man the Cultural appropriation.
