REGULAR SCHOOL COMMJTTEE MEETING
7:00 p.m.,Wednesday,June 9,2021

School Committee Members Present:Chair Carin Sychterz.Vice Chair Marwa Nassanien (arrived
slightly late due to locked door at City Hall),Warren Caruso,John Hiatt,Clare Mundell,Susan
Sorg,and Timothy SulTette
A.1.&2.The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.by Chair Sychterz.The Pledge of
Allegiance followed.
B.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended approval to adjust the
agenda to remove A.3.a.Recognition,to add D.2.b.PCHC School Based Health
Clinic Lpdate and E.c.1.b.Administrator Nomination.
VOTED 6-0 to approve the adjustments to the agenda as presented.
0.1 .a.Dr.Harris-Smedberg recommended Committee approval to the Bangor School
Department’s participation as a plaintiff in the mass action lawsuit against JUUL
Labs,Inc.and to authorize the Superintendent to take the action necessary for the
Bangor School Department to file claims in the mass action lawsuit.
VOTED 6-1 to approve Bangor’s participation in the mass action lawsuit against
JUUL Labs,Inc.as presented.Approved:Members Caruso,Hassanien,Iviundell,
Sorg,Surrette,and Sychterz.Opposed:Member Hiatt.
D.2.a.Dana Carver-Bialer reported to the School Committee an informational review of
her first year as the newly formed Affirmative Action/Title IX Coordinator at
Bangor High School.
D.2.b.Interim Superintendent HaITis-Smedberg reported to the School Committee that
PCHC would like to move forward with the Student Based Health Clinic,even if
the grant is not awarded.PCI-IC would assume all costs to get the Student Based
Health Clinic up and running.A vote will be taken at the June 23 School Committee
meeting.
D.2.c.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg reported the following reassignments for
the 2021-2022 school year:
Eva Marks from Kindergarten Teacher at Abraham Lincoln School to Grade 3
Teacher at Fruit Street School
D.2.d.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg reported the following resignations:

Annemarie Roberts (.25)IEP Coordinator 14th Street School
Sarah Viekers (.5)IEP Coordinator Fruit Street School

E.1.a.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended the School Committee
approval of the Draft Minutes of the May 26,2021 Regular School Committee
Meeting.
VOTED 7-0 to approve the Draft Minutes of the May 26,2021 Regular School
Committee Meeting.
E.I .b.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended approval of the April 2021
Financial Report.
VOTED 7-0 to approve the report as presented.
E.I .c.l.a.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended the following teacher
nomination(s)for the 2021-2022 school year.with a one-year Probationary
Contract:

E.1.c.l.b.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedherg recommended approval of the following
administrator nomination for the 2021-2022 school year.with a one-year
Probationary Contract:
Daniel Mayo Director Bangor Regional Program
VOTED 7-0 to approve the administrator nomination as presented.
E.1 .d.Committee Member Surrette shared the following donation(s):
To James F.Doughty School from the DMT Fund in Memory of Danielle
Thompson,a cash donation to benefit students,having a total dollar value of $300.
VOTED 7-0 to accept the following donation(s)with many thanks.
E.2.a.J-6.Interim Superintendent Harris-Smedberg recommended receipt of the first reading
of the following revised policies:
Revised Policy GDB-5 —Lunch Aide Compensation Guide
Revised Policy GDB-6 —Executive Office Compensation Guide
Revised Policy GDB-7 —Support Staff Compensation Guide
Revised Policy GDB-8 —Adult and Community Education Compensation Guide
Revised Policy GDB-9 —Supplemental Compensation Guide
Revised Policy GDB-10 —Educational Technology Staff Compensation Guide
VOTED 7-0 to receive the first reading of the revised policies.
F.I.Vice Chair Hassanien rcquested information about graduation.Principal Butler
provided an update.
Chair Sychterz requested information about ESSER hinds.Interim Superintendent
Harris-Smedberg provided an update.
F.2.Member Mundell provided an update on the SPRPCE Committee.Director Babin
provided an overview of the program,budget,and data.Dr.Webb provided
overview information.
Vice Chair Hassanien reported on the DEl Committee.She shared the projects the
group completed.
Member Caruso asked about the SPRPCE Leadership vote.Member Mundell
provided information.Vice Chair Hassanien asked for further clarification.Interim
Superintendent E-Iarris-Smedberg provided further information.
H.1,Chair Sychterz reviewed the important dates.
Member Hiatt added comments about the SPRPCE Committee.
Member Caruso congratulated the three School Committee members who have
BHS graduates and further congratulated all BHS graduates.
Member Surrctte thanked Dr.Webb and staff of the Abraham Lincoln School for
keeping schools open and running during a pandemic,sharing his children had a
positive year.
Chair Sychterz congratulated the BHS graduates.
Vice Chair Hassanien congratulated the graduating seniors.
Vice Chair Hassanien asked for clarification regarding the budget meetings with
City Council.Interim Superintendent explained the process.Vice Chair Hassanien
will not be present due to a scheduled trip,but is supportive of the budget.
