RECREATION DIRECTOR
DEFINITION
This is professional recreation work involving the administration and
supervision of the projects and programsof the r eation division.
The employee in this class performs a ariety of administrative duties in
coordinating the work of the field staff, in handling publicity and public
relations, scheduling events, and in maintaining aM pro sing programrecords
and reports. Occasionally this employee organ and directs specialized

In conference with the department head, develops the over-all municipal
recreation program and prepares rules and regulations governing each activity.
Supervises all division personnel.
Maintains time and personnel records on all employees in this division.
Maintains activity and attendance reports submitted by field personnel
and compiles periodic summary reports of recreation activities.
Plans, schedules and supervises various recreation programs.
Prepares material for public information.
Supervises
collections and deposits of all fees from recreational activities.
Prepares proper records of personnel and equipment needs to supply the
information necessary

REQUIRED KNOWLRDGES SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the basic principles of organization and financial
administration.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and purposes of public recreation
including a good understanding of activities which make up a communityrecreation
program.
Considerable knowledge of the methods involved in organizing, conducting and
supervising recreation activities.
Considerable knowledge of a wide variety of recreation activities including
competitive and group sports, and ability to teschsuch sports and to officiate
at athletic events.
Considerable knowledge of human behavior, psychology and mental hygiene as
applied to varied groups participating in recreation activities.
Ability to coordinate special recreation activities through training and
supervision of staff.
Ability to gain and retain the cooperation of the community, to work harmony

PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR
DEFINITION
This is professional recreation work of an administrative nature in
planning and directing the over-all municipal parks and recreation program.
The employee in this class is responsible for developing and administering
comprehensive community cultural, recreational and other leisure time activities
on e year around basis. He is responsible for all programs and activities,
personnel, property and equipment of the department. He assures that program
objectives are accomplished at parks, playgrounds, recreation centers and ether
locations through the supervision of professional andsubprofessfonal personnel
assigned to conduct or supervise specific aspects of the program. Work requires
considerable public contact in art=lating individual interest and participation
in the programs and developing the cooperation of private agencies.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the City Manager who
reviews program accomplishments through observation and conferences.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (My one position may not include all of the duties

Plana and develops recreational programs and facilities for the community,
or approves activities, plana and procedures prepared by subordinate staff members.
Selects and assigns all department personnel who perform maintenance and
program activities at the parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers.
Elevates the adequacy of existing physical facilities for parks and recreation,
and develops plans for alterations and extension of areas.
Coordinates the city program wl th community recreation activities conducted
by private groups, and assists representatives of such private groups in develop-
ing and extending their programs.
Makes arrangements for the use of facilities controlled by other public
Agencies or departments.
Prepares budget requests for recreation and park purposes and controls
expenditures so that they are kept within appropriations.
Prepares correspondence and communications pertaining to recreation, and
directs the preparation of publicity designed to interest the public in park and
recreation programs.

Thorough knowledge of the objectives and principles of public recreation
including a thorough understanding of activities which make up a community rec-
reation program.
Thorough knowledge of the facilities and equipment needed in a broad park
end recreation program and of the proper arrangement of recreation areas.
Thorough knowledge of a wide variety of recreation activities.
Considerable knowledge of human behavior, psychology and mental hygiene as
applied to varied groups participating in recreation activities.
Ability to develop and administer A recreation program suited to the needs of
the community.
Ability to plan, onetime, coordinate and direct the activities and personnel
involved in a well-rounded recreation program.

and graduation from a four year college or university with specialization in

DEFINITION
This is responsible administrative work in giving direct assistance to the
parks and recreation director in the planning, executirn and review of the
municipal parks and recreation program.
An employee in this class performs various administrative and staff functime
in connection with the internal programand financial operations of the department,
and occasionally supervises
work programsn the field. Work is performed under
the general supervision ofthe parks and recreation director.

Prepares special reports on request and conducts studies on a variety of
subjects.
Maintains financial records for the department.

Works closely with the division heads in the parks and r eatfon department
and with other department and division heads on interdepartmental matters.

PARKS AND MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR - 337
DEFINITION
This is responsible administrative work in directing the maintenance and
custodial activities of all buildings and grounds in the parka and recreation
department and Bass Park.
Work requires the application of advanced skills in the building trades,
the operation of complex ice -making and heating equipment, and grounds maintenance.
The employee in this class i responsible for all maintenance activities, personnel,
and equipment assigned tc this division. Work is performed under the general Super-
vision of the parks and recreation director.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (My one position may not include all of the duties

Supervises all custodial and maintenance employees in the parks and recreation
department.
Supervises the construction and reconstruction of recreation facilities,
including buildings, grounds, and equipment.
Plans, schedules, and directs maintenance and custodial activities.
Maintains time and personnel records on all deep loyees in the division.
Prepares proper records of personnel, equipment, and material needs to
