ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
DEFINITION
This is work of a managerial and staff nature related to the functions of
the City Manager and Department Heads.
This employee serves to relieve administrative officers of some
administrative
details, preparesspecial reports o request, and Conducts studies and research
es
ne ery for the compilation of facts upon which decisions can later ber ached.'
The employee perform certain managerial work of a interdepartmental mature.
Assignments frequently involve working closely with department heads and depart-
mental per net Work is subject to general or specific instruction and advice,
depending upon the nature of the assignment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (Any one position may not include all of the duties
listed, nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in
positions of this class.)
Assists the City Manager and Department Heads by engaging it
research on
variety of problems, gathers background material relating to these problems, and
prepares possible courses of solution.
Assists in the preparation of the annual budget by engaging in special
research, compilation of data and preparation of the final document.
Assists in the preparation of materiels and plans in the City's public
relations program.
Aa sists in the preparation of the actual report.
Works with departmental personnel in in lamenting decisions of the City
Council or City Manager or any other agency for which he may be working what it
is deemed desirable.
Serves as a liaison among departments in handling of procedures or inter-
pretations which are matter of interdepartmental concern.
May be called upon to investigate and report on inquiries or comp lalnts
from the general public relative to services rendered by the City.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEEGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Extensive knowledge of public administration with particular reference to
local government
Thorough knowledge of the basic principles of organisation, financial
administration, operations analysisn
and personnel administration.
Considerable knowledge of the objectivesand practices of the various
administrative functions of local government.
A working knowledge of accounting, nstatistics and administrative law.
Ability to curry out brief general instructions of a superior effectively.
Ability to present facts and express ideas effectively, both orally and
in writing.
Ability to analyze a variety of administrative problems, make recommendations
for their solution and to put such recommendations into effect.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
department heads, departmental personnel and the general public.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Considerable experience
of a managerial nature in a public jurisdiction,
or graduation from a £oaiyear college or university with a major in public
administration, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
