DLFIIJITION
This is general duty police work in the protection of life and property through
the enforcement of laws and ordinances.
Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and police
patrolmen receive assignments and instructions from officersof higher rank. Work
normally consists of routine patrol, preliminary investigation, and traffic regulation
duties in a designated a on an
assigned shift and may be performed in patrol cars,
on motorcycles, o n foot. Work involves an element and exercise independent wigment
in meeting emergencies. Employees may be assigned to work on special assinvaents which
call upon specialized abilities and knowledge usually attained through experience as
•
uniformed officer. Work methods and results are checked by superior officers through
personal inspections, review of reports and discussions.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAhRLE3 OF WORK
Patrols a designated areof the city on foot, o motorcycle, or radio—
equipped car to preserve lawand order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime,
to direct traffic and to enforce motor vehicle operation and parking regulations.
Answers calls aM complaints involving fire, automobile a cidents, robberies,
neighborhood disturbances, men other misdemeanors and felonies.
Secures the scene of crime and administers first aid,'conducts preliminary
investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses, and makes arrears; testifies as a
witness in court.
Administers first aid at the scene of automobile accidents; interviews witnesses
and gathers information; prepares detailed accident reverts.
May be assigned to s s an investigative or juvenile officer assisting in the
investigation of serious prince or handling of Juvenile matters.
Interviews persons with complaints aM inquiries and attempts to make proper
disposition or directs them to proper authorities.
Gives advice on laws and ordinances aid general information to the public.
Appears in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of prime;
investigates reports of missing persons; maintains surveillance overuspected criminals;
participates in the return of fugitives from outside the state or from other cities.
Nay be assigned to airport patrol duties.
Attends regular training classes in police methods, first aid, target practices
and related snbjects.
Makes initial i vestigations of serious crimes.
Investigates fatal traffic accidents
Performa other duties requiring escape degrees of reeponsibility.

Knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures with ability to apply this
knowledge to specific situations.
Knowledge of the geography of the City of Bangor and the location of important
buildings, or ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly.
Ability to remember nam s, faces, and retails of incidents.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to develop skill in the u of firearme.
Ability to analyze situations and oto adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses
of action, with due regard to sounding hazards and .circumstances.
Ability to obtain a driverus license. '
