June 7, 2019
Minutes
Present: Jane Bragg, Andrea Littlefield, Edythe Dyer, Ed Chernesky, Mary Donovan, Tristin Greenlaw,
Liam Riordan, Owen Smith, Lovern Stockwell, Betsy Lundy (City staff liaison),
Absent: Tristine Currier, Amy Roeder, Cary Weston
Meeting called to order at 8:33am
MOVED, SECONDED and VOTED approval of minutes of May 3 meeting
Members were asked to identify themselves and grant applicants in attendance were welcomed.
There were no conflicts of interest announced for any of the 4 grant applications.
The chair reviewed the grant review process. Two applicants were in attendance: Beckett Mundell-Wood
with his mother and Brian Hinrichs and Sarah McCarthy representing Bangor Symphony Orchestra. The
two applicants in attendance made presentations followed by Q&A.
Commissioners discussed the four applications and voted as follows.
MOVED, SECONDED and VOTED unanimously to to the Bangor City Council the
following four grants: To Becket Mundell Wood up to $750 for materials for the purpose of creating a
Lego model of the Bangor Public Library, contingent on agreement from the BPL that such a model will
be accepted and publicly displayed; to Orson Horchler the amount of $363.72 for materials to create a
wheat paste mural honoring the late downtown businessman Tony Sohns; to the Bangor Symphony
Orchestra the amount of $5,000 in support of community programming at the Bangor Arts Exchange;
and, to the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance the amount of $1,000 in support of their annual awards
program to be held in Bangor at the Bangor Public Library.
CULTURAL ASSET SURVEY update - The results from the work of John Bapst students was
distributed. A discussion was held re next steps.
MOVED, SECONDED and VOTED to up to $1250 to hire someone to move the cultural asset
survey forward with details to be laid out in call for
Liam volunteered to create a call for applications which will be circulated to commission members. It is
noted that the $1250 will come from the $2500 in the budget for this work. Results of the next step will
be requested to be available at the ARTober kick-off.
ARTober Kick-off - Liam reported that preparations are underway for ARTober kick-off at the BAE with
a confirmed date of Friday, October 4 from 5- 7.
The commission thanked Andrea Littlefield for her service and wished her the best in her new venture in
Austin, Texas. The commission will be looking for a member with expertise in social media
Upcoming events noted: Reading of the Mueller report at Hauck Auditorium June 15 - 16; DBP Murals
going up downtown this weekend; summer solstice celebrations on June 21 by BSO/Art Museum and the
DBP Adopted Garden; GreenDrinks June 11 at BSB.
Next meeting: August 2 (no meeting in July)
