HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-04-12 ProclamationPROCLAIMING APRIL AS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS, 2021 marks the twentieth anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time to draw attention to the prevalence of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and online harassment, and educate individuals and communities about how to prevent it; and WHEREAS, In the United States alone, nearly one in five women and one in 67 men have been raped at some time in their lives (Smith et al., 2017). One in six boys and one in four girls is sexually abused before the age of 18 (Dube et al., 2005); and WHEREAS, Unfortunately, with the increase in virtual connection for work, school, or entertainment comes an increase in online abuse and harassment, Consent and boundaries can be violated online in a number of ways; and WHEREAS, Rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and online harassment impact our families, communities, schools, and workplaces on a daily basis. Sexual violence is widespread and has public health implications for the whole community; and WHEREAS, SAAM is an opportunity to recognize organizations that work diligently in partnership and solidarity with survivors to prevent abuse and violence in our community; and Z NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Daniel J. Tremble, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and acknowledge each day of the year is an opportunity to create change for the future. Prevention is possible when everyon( and the first step is increasing education, awareness, and community involvement. It's time for action to create a safer environment for all.
