Item/Subjects Approval. of Bangor 2000 Work Program
Responsible Department: Community and Economic Development
As set forth in the contract between the City of Bangor, Greater
Bangor Chamber of Commerce and Bangor 2000, the Bangor 2000 Steering
Committee is requesting City Council approval of the proposed work
program.
The work program includes a variety of activities in the
functional area of:
1. Marketing and public relations
2. Finance
3. Convention/visitors servicing
4. Roseate
5. Beautification
The work program has been approved by the Bangor 2000 Steering
Committee and the Greater Bangor Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors. The Community a Economic Development Committee has
recommended approval.

ORDERED,
THAT WHEREAS, the City of Bangor and the Greater Bangor
Chamber of Commerce jointly sponsor the activities of the Bangor
2000 organization; and
WHEREAS, the City and the Chamber have the
opportunity and responsibility to review and approve Bangor 2000
Annual Work Plan; and
WHEREAS, the proposed 1991 Work Plan fulfills the
City's goals of promoting the local convention and visitor
Industry, the "Keep America Beautiful' program and other
beautification activities.
BOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED THAT the 1991 Bangor
2000 Work Plan be approved.

Harkecing and Public Relations
Action Steps
I. Develop strategy co market Bangor a site for conferences, c entions,
meetings, and seminars and related strategy to attract visitors/tourists to
the area, strategies will address the following questions:
A. What are the cnaracterierics of Bangor's c and visitors
"product"? whata
are the product's a andliabilities? Haw can
the product's assets be exploited and liabilities be mitigated? How
can the product's attributes be "packaged" for maximum competitive
advantage?
B. Who is Bangor 2GOG's "targe[market formeetings and conventions?
Hear can this "targeted" market be identified? How can potential
visitors/tourists be identified?
C. What themes and massages about our product should be conveyed to the
identified target audiences?
B. what is the beat and most cost-effective techique or combination of
techniques for coammunicating our themes and messages to the identified
target groups? print advertising? Slower mail? trade shows?
telemarketing? personnel selling?
E. What financial resourcesare necessary to support and sustain the

marketing strategy? what are cM1e potential sources of these funds?
2. Develop high quality sales tools to support marketing function. Potential
sales tools include:
• Updated .yeeting Planner's Guide
* Trade Shaw Display (Possible joint project with Bangor Planning
and Development Department)
e Promotional Video
• Pamphlet, Brochure, Direct .fail piece
• Burtons, Bumper Stickers, and/or other promotional Items
• Seasonal Newspaper/Magazine of Attractions, Events, Restaurants,
and Lodging
3. Respond to all self-directed inquires expeditiously and with professionalism.
6. Take the marketing initiative and be aggressive in the market by Implementing
the marketing stragegy as soon as it is developed.
5. Develop strong working relationship with Bass Park management
order to coordinate marketing approach for Civic Center, Auditorium, Fair
and Face Track.
6. Develop strong working relationship with Naive Department of Economic
and Community Development and Office Of Tourism to maximize "lead"
referrals and coordination of Marketing.-
]. Increase visibility of Bangor 2000 and educate public on importance of
tourism, meetings and conventions, and the hospitality industry through
at least two guest columnsperyear in the Bangor Deily News.
S. Generate at least one pre n
release per nth for local television, radio,
and BEN. Releases would be "newsworthy" and cover events, information
and announcements.
9. Write column for monthly Greater Bangor Chamber Of Commerce Newsletter.
10. Develop Brochure on Bangor 2000: who we are and what we do.
11. Generate at least four speaking engagements per year before clubs and
service Organizations in the Greater Bangor area.
12. Develop media package, provide press
and Public relations functions,
and publish program book to promote and support the Second Annual Garden
Show.

• Greeting attendees at Bangor International Airport
• Packaging ^information/hospitality" packets
• Staffing "Aformacidn/haspicality"booths at hotels and/or

• Providing dinner reservation
services

2. Evaluate the Community Calendar and determine if there are ways the
Publication might be improved.
