HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-02-13 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes City of Bangor, Commission on Cultural Development Minutes February 13, 2014 8:30 AM City Council Chambers Commissioners present: George Kinghorn (Chair), Judy Boothby, Councilor Josh Plourde, Elisa Young, Mary Budd, Uli Guthrie, Jamie Ballinger , Tom Avila, Emily Burnham, Kat Johnson and Jason Bird (staff) 1. Previous Meeting Minutes A motion was made by Emily Burnham and seconded by Elissa Young to approve the previous meeting minutes as presented. The motion passed by a unanimous vote. 2. Consideration of two grant requests Representatives of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra presented their proposed project to expand its offerings in Bangor in pop up style smaller performances. George Kinghorn suggested that the members review the budgets presented and asked the BSO representatives to stay while that happened. Mary Budd represented the Penobscot Theatre’s request and gave a brief overview of the project. The Commission considered the proposals in light of the remaining budget allocation. George Kinghorn suggested reducing the grant awards in order to stay within budget limitations. After further consideration, Jamie Ballinger made a motion, which was seconded by Judy Boothby, to award the Bangor Symphony Orchestra a grant of $2500 and the Penobscot Theatre a grant of $4000. The motion passed unanimously, with Mary Budd abstaining. 3. Draft Mission Statement After discussion about the draft mission statement, Elissa Young made a motion to adopt the draft mission statement into the developing Comprehensive Arts and Culture Plan that will be sent to the Council for review and consideration. The motion was seconded by Emily Burnham. The motion passed by a unanimous vote. 4. Other Business The Commission discussed the Bangor Arts brand/logo and how to expand the its reach and use. The group felt that that it’s use should not exclude non-profit arts organizations located, or doing programming, within the Bangor. Jamie Ballenger made a motion to grandfather in all previous Bangor Arts members and information into future Bangor Arts materials and members without the need submitting an application. Emily Burnham seconded the motion. The motion passed by a unanimous vote. George Kinghorn made a motion to develop an application program where organizations can request to use the logo and to be included in future marketing materials. Jamie Ballinger seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
