PUBLIC HEARINGS
Item No. 1 115 Main Street – Best Bib & Tucker
To consider a request for a Certificate of Appropriateness and Design Review
approval to add signage to two awnings.
Action Taken: Certificate of Appropriateness approval granted / denied by a vote
of 5 to 0.
Item No. 2 60 Main Street – Haworth Academic Center
To consider a request for Certificate of Appropriateness and Design Review
approval to install a wall sign.
Action Taken: Certificate of Appropriateness and Design Review approval
granted / denied by a vote of 5 to 0.
Item No. 3 61 Central Street – City of Bangor
To consider a request for a Certificate of Appropriateness and Design Review
approval for rail modifications at Hannibal Hamlin Park and Kenduskeag Stream-
State Street Park.
Action Taken: Certificate of Appropriateness and Design Review approval
granted / denied by a vote of 4 to 1 with the condition that wire mesh be used to
match existing wire mesh areas.
Item No. 4 28 Main Street – Stephen C. Smith
To consider a request for Certificate of Appropriateness and Design Review
approval to scrape the paint off the granite lintels; install a sign on the corner of
the buildings; replace the deteriorating flashing along the edges of the roof with
new copper flashing; replace windows and doors.
Action Taken: Application was heard in four (4) separate motions.
Motion # 1, regarding signage - Certificate of Appropriateness and Design
Review approval granted / denied by a vote of 5 to 0 with the conditions that the
signage be mounted in mortar and not into brick and that existing second floor
window signage be removed.
Motion # 2, regarding paint removal off of granite -Certificate of Appropriateness
and Design Review approval granted / denied by a vote of 5 to 0. Approval was
amended to include removal of paint off of all granite on first floor not just on
lintels.
Motion # 3, regarding flashing – Certificate of Appropriateness and Design
Review approval granted / denied by a vote of 5 to 0.
Motion # 4, regarding replacement of windows and doors – Certificate of
Appropriateness and Design Review approval granted / denied by a vote of 5 to 0
with the condition that the door matches existing door into Sweet’s Market.
Item No. 5 40 Harlow Street & 73 Central Street – University of Maine Museum of Art
To consider a request for Certificate of Appropriateness and Design Review
approval to install two wall signs and replace a freestanding sign at 40 Harlow
Street; and place art banners at 40 Harlow Street and 73 Central Street.
Action Taken: Application was heard in three (3) motions.
Motion #1, regarding placement of art banners – Certificate of Appropriateness
and Design Review approval granted / denied by a vote of 5 to 0.
Motion #2, regarding replacement of freestanding sign – Certificate of
Appropriateness and Design Review approval granted / denied by a vote of 4 to 1.
Motion #3, regarding wall signs – UMMA withdrew application for wall signage
above door. Certificate of Appropriateness and Design Review approval granted /
denied by a vote of 5 to 0 for the placement of wall sign “Norumbega Hall” on
building above third floor windows on Harlow Street side of building.
Item No. 6 174 Main Street – Bangor House Proprietary –
To consider a request for Certificate of Appropriateness to modify balcony
railing.
Action Taken: Certificate of Appropriateness approval granted / denied by a vote
of 5 to 0.
Item No. 7 17 High Street – Gerald and Barbara Ewing
To consider a request for Certificate of Appropriateness approval to construct a
detached garage.
Action Taken: Application withdrawn by the applicants
Item No. 8 183 Main Street – House Revivers
To consider a request for Certificate of Appropriateness approval for the
connector windows proposed for 183 & 201 Main Street.
Action Taken: Certificate of Appropriateness granted / denied by a vote of 5 to 0.
