Andddere Encouraging Aroostook Development m Improve the Transportation Infrastructure in Hathern, Eas[e+n, and Western Maine By tM a+y Caswif OW City ofBm w.- BBBOLVBD, WHEREAS, safer and more efficent transportation Infrastructure; which serve Northern, Eastern, and Western Maine will lead directly to economic growth and benefit the entire state; and WHEREAS, in order to bang economic stability and vitality to the Eastern, Northern and Western parts of Maine, It Is vital that the State of Maine complete Its major road system which began when Me Interstate was construc[etl 50 years ago; and WHEREAS, the completion of I-95 to the St. john Valley and the East-West Highway will complete Maine's major road system; and WHEREAS, the northern part of the state, due in part to Its inadequate road system, is at a severe economic disadvantage to regions with more efficient roadways; and WHEREAS, the completion of I-95 to its nonhemmost terminus and the construction of an East-West Highway wmplement each other by making each highway even more economically valuable; and WHEREAS, the beltway to bang economic vitality to the northern, eastern and western parts of the state is through Imaging Maine's infrastructure up to standard; and WHEREAS, we agree with the Maine Legislature's Task Farce to Study Equal Economic Opportunity for all Regions of the State, that -Mine lack of major routes from north to south in northern Maine and from east -to -west in the central area of the state Is a serious disadvantage to many areas when trying to attract new business. Because there are no major interstate highways serving these routes, businesses discount northern, eastern, and western Maine as being remote and Inaccessible ... the Task Farce believes that..plare must be accelerated to Improve opportunity for economic development". NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, meeting In Iola session with the City Council of the City of Brewer, that we support the effmts of the East-West Highway Association and Leaders Encouraging Aroostook Development to support and defend the consfntctlon and completion of the 1-95 northern extension and an East-West Highway from Calais m Coburn Gore and Gilead.
